More about the course

At the end of our two-year Uniformed Services - Level 3 course, you'll have gained a solid understanding of the skills and demands required for a career in public services. You'll learn about a range of subjects, such as leadership, coaching skills, understanding collaboration between services and drill, all of which are essential components for a career in the public sector.

You'll have the opportunity to take part in activities which will enhance your understanding of a career in the industry, from opportunities to go on residential visits to develop teamwork and leadership skills, to meeting a range of guest speakers from the Army, Navy and the Police, to participating in recruitment events. We'll provide you with an understanding of the personal commitment and fitness requirements needed to be employed in a uniformed service role.

This qualification will provide you with a solid foundation to see you step up and achieve your dream career, allowing you to progress into employment or further study and, from there, towards the entry qualifications and requirements for a specific uniformed service.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs in grade 4/C or above. including English and maths.

What will I achieve?

Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a Level 3 NCFE Diploma in Uniformed Services.

This study programme will be taught over 12 hours across three to four days per week, which will be delivered at Kidderminster College and a number of sporting facilities within the local area.

Classes generally run between 9am-4:15pm but may vary.

Work experience opportunities

You'll be required to complete a work experience placement as part of the volunteering unit of the course. Your placement will be over 30 hours long and will be related to the uniformed service industry. You'll be able to choose this placement yourself so you can better experience your potential future career.

There will be a variety of activities available throughout the duration of your course, including team building at Shrewsbury Prison, visits to military bases to learn about hierarchy and routine in the different uniformed services and fundraising for charity.

There will also be a range of guest speakers from relevant uniformed services giving talks on campus to give you an insight into your potential chosen career.

English and maths

If you're aged 16-18 and haven't achieved a GCSE grade 4/C in English and maths, you'll need to take classes in English and maths alongside your programme of study.

English will be included through learning new terminology and being able to communicate with a range of people.

Maths will be included through learning calculations for administering medications.

Tutorial

Tutorial is a program of essential topics affecting you as a potential employee and member of a community. You will cover topics to improve employability skills, mental fitness (both for you and those around you) and much more. It is an essential part of your personal development.

As part of you weekly timetable, you will be expected to take part in Tutorial. This consists of a 1-1 meeting (at least 3 a year) and Personal Development activities that develop you both personally and professionally. Part of the focus is to raise digital Standards and take part in Employer Engagement Activities such as guest speakers, logging Work Experience and in person and online networking.

We work with Student Experience, Careers and your Curriculum team to ensure your Tutorial elements link to your industry area and to create opportunities to develop key skills for profile raising as well as enabling you to create competitive applications and CVs.

Tutorial is also an opportunity to check in with you as part of a group and individually. You can discuss any issues you might be having that affect your learning and essentially identify strategies and support available to you.

Where can I progress?

Upon completion of this course, you can go on to study for a university degree, or you can apply to our Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship or another apprenticeship of your choice. You can also apply to the Military or Fire Service for full-time roles.

Tutor - Uniformed Services

I teach Uniformed Services at Kidderminster College and am passionate about supporting students to achieve their educational and career goals, whether that be to join the Police, Military, Fire Service or go on to University for further study. I have a background in criminal justice, specialising in youth offending and have a particular interest in supporting students with additional needs. I enjoy teaching this course as it covers such a wide range of relevant knowledge and students enjoy the mix of practical and theory lessons.
