Start your journey through the dynamic world of sound and rhythm with our Level 2 Music course. This foundational course is the first step towards a successful career in the music industry.

Explore different ways of creating music, from performance to studio production, developing an in-depth knowledge of music theory.

Develop your skills in composition, fine-tuning your ability to create original pieces that resonate with audiences. You'll be given opportunities to showcase your performance abilities while honing your production techniques, developing a well-rounded set of skills crucial to the modern musician.

You'll also learn how to market and promote yourself across all digital media platforms which is essential in today's digitally-driven music scene.

On this course, you will develop the core skills you will need to go on to study Music - Level 3.

UAL (University of the Arts London) are the UK’s leading Creative Industries awarding body. They have designed their suite of qualifications with education and industry partners, to provide students with the latest knowledge and skills, and enable students to progress to higher education or employment.

Entry requirements:

An aptitude for live music performance is required for this course e.g. ability to sing and/or play a musical instrument

How am I assessed?

There are no exams with UAL qualifications. All modules are assessed at pass/fail only until your final module, the Final Major Project - in which all the knowledge and skills you have developed over the course are put to use in a project designed by you and the tutors to showcase your unique skills and thus maximise your potential in terms of your final grade.

Work experience opportunities:

Using our facilities, you’ll get the chance to learn the student environment, go in education trips and learn from guest speakers. Previous visiting professionals have included Andrew Marston (BBC Producing) and Jen Bone (Shirefolk).

Whilst on the course you will have the opportunity to gain work experience at:

Birmingham Repertory Theatre
The Regal Theatre Royal Tenbury Wells (e.g. in 2024 students mixed live sound for the Christmas pantomime “CinderElla”.
Theatre SSL
B:Music and Dubbs in the Middle
Working sound and lights at various concerts, events and festivals in the area.
DJ’ing (Hard House) at venues all around the area.
Community Music – all students go out into the community to play songs and entertain pupils at mainstream and SEN schools, alongside a centre for adults with learning difficulties.

English and Maths:

English will be included in learning new terminology and for written assessments.

Maths will be included in keeping to time and counting beats.

Tutorial

Tutorial is a program of essential topics affecting you as a potential employee and member of a community. You will cover topics to improve employability skills, mental fitness (both for you and those around you) and much more. It is an essential part of your personal development.

As part of you weekly timetable, you will be expected to take part in Tutorial. This consists of a 1-1 meeting (at least 3 a year) and Personal Development activities that develop you both personally and professionally. Part of the focus is to raise digital Standards and take part in Employer Engagement Activities such as guest speakers, logging Work Experience and in person and online networking.

We work with Student Experience, Careers and your Curriculum team to ensure your Tutorial elements link to your industry area and to create opportunities to develop key skills for profile raising as well as enabling you to create competitive applications and CVs.

Tutorial is also an opportunity to check in with you as part of a group and individually. You can discuss any issues you might be having that affect your learning and essentially identify strategies and support available to you.

Tutor - Music

Music is my all-consuming passion. This included writing, performing, recording, producing, running a record label, tour managing and managing bands, before moving into teaching and lecturing. Having the opportunity to teach and support students through the music course as they transform from beginners to fully fledged professional musicians, whether that be behind the scenes or 'out front' performing, is an absolute joy.
