This course is ideal for anyone who wants to become a bricklayer and is new to the construction industry, as well as those currently working in a related role supporting qualified tradespeople. The apprenticeship provides an excellent opportunity to demonstrate your competence, as it assesses your ability to carry out a wide range of bricklaying skills to industry-set standards. The qualification is nationally recognised by the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) and enables you to apply for the CSCS Blue Skilled Worker Card.
Bricklayers construct and repair structures using bricks, blocks and other building materials set in mortar. Their work includes building walls, foundations, partitions, arches and features such as chimney stacks, as well as refurbishing and restoring brickwork and masonry on renovation projects. Bricklayers work across a wide variety of sites, including large commercial developments, new housing projects, extensions, alterations and restoration works. They may work independently on smaller tasks or as part of a bricklaying team on larger projects, collaborating with other bricklaying gangs and construction trades.
Entry requirements:
- GCSE at grade 3 (D) or above, or equivalent in Maths and English
What will I achieve?
Upon successful completion of this apprenticeship, you will achieve a Level 2 Bricklayer qualification.
What will I learn?
Laying bricks, blocks, and other types of building components in mortar to construct
Repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches, and other structures

You must meet the requirements of an end-point assessment in order to be deemed competent in your job role.
How am I assessed?
Once you have completed all elements of your apprenticeship, you will enter the gateway and get ready to take your end-point assessment. The end-point assessment consists of a knowledge test, a skills test and oral questioning.
Where can I progress?
Upon completion of this course, you will have satisfied the requirements to obtain a CSCS Card and progress appropriately in the construction industry.
Apprenticeship pay:
You will be employed as a regular employee on a contract of employment for at least 30 hours per week and paid at least the National Minimum Wage for an Apprentice, currently £7.55 per hour. If you are over 19, employers can pay the National Minimum Wage for an Apprentice for the first year of the apprenticeship. After this first year, the salary rate will change to the National Minimum Wage for your age.

Green Technology Centre ManagerAs a dedicated Site Manager, I oversee the centre's daily operations and support learners in their journey toward achieving their qualifications. My responsibilities include managing four departments: Motor Vehicle, Vehicle Respraying, Bricklaying, and Property Maintenance Operations, offering qualifications ranging from Level 1 to Level 3, as well as apprenticeship programs in these areas. With a background as a fully qualified motor mechanic and vehicle respraying tutor for eight years, I bring hands-on expertise to my role in management.

Lecturer - ConstructionI’ve spent the last 30 years working as a bricklayer and builder, gaining experience across a wide range of projects and developing a strong understanding of the trade. After a serious accident, I decided to move into teaching and take on the role of Brickwork Tutor so I could pass on my knowledge and skills to others. Supporting the next generation of bricklayers is something I’m really proud to do. I enjoy helping learners build confidence on the tools, understand the foundations of good workmanship, and prepare for a successful career in the industry.

What can I do with a qualification in Bricklayer?
Daily tasks:
- Visits and advises clients on the use and servicing of electrical and electronic systems and equipment.
- Diagnoses and detects faults and implements procedures to maintain efficient operation of systems and equipment.
- Plans installation methods, checks completed installation for safety and controls or undertakes the initial running of the new electrical or electronic equipment or system.
- Sets up equipment, undertakes tests, takes readings, performs calculations and records and interprets data.
- Plans and prepares work and test schedules based on specifications and drawings.

Daily tasks:
- Examines electrical plant or machinery, domestic appliances and other electrical assembly for faults using test equipment and replaces worn parts and faulty wiring.
- Installs electrical plant, machinery and other electrical fixtures and appliances such as fuse boxes, generators, light sockets etc..
- Assembles parts and sub-assemblies using hand tools and by brazing, riveting or welding.
- Cuts, bends and installs electrical conduit.
- Selects, cuts and lays wires and connects to sockets, plugs or terminals by crimping, soldering, brazing or bolting.

- Levels, aligns and embeds stone in mortar and faces brick, concrete or steel frame with stone to make and repair structures.
- Uses hand and power tools to shape, trim, carve, cut letters in and polish stone.
- Spreads mortar on foundations and bricks, and places, levels and aligns bricks in mortar bed.
- Marks and cuts stone using hammers, mallet and hand or pneumatic chisels.
- Examines drawings, photographs and specifications to determine job requirements.
