    Tutor - Carpentry

    I began my career as a carpentry apprentice and contributed my skills on a new build site. I progressed to site manager, then to contract manager, for over 20 years. I always aimed to give back to an industry that had given me so much, so I became a lecturer to pass on my experience and passion for carpentry and joinery trade to the next generation.

    When I left school at 16, I started an apprenticeship in Electrical Installation at West Bromwich College. After many years in the electrical trade, working for my Dad and also a stint as a self-employed person, I decided to take up an offer of a job in education. Working as a tutor and passing on my skills and knowledge became my passion. I found much pleasure and joy in teaching the next generation of electricians.

    As a dedicated Site Manager, I oversee the centre's daily operations and support learners in their journey toward achieving their qualifications. My responsibilities include managing four departments: Motor Vehicle, Vehicle Respraying, Bricklaying, and Property Maintenance Operations, offering qualifications ranging from Level 1 to Level 3, as well as apprenticeship programs in these areas. With a background as a fully qualified motor mechanic and vehicle respraying tutor for eight years, I bring hands-on expertise to my role in management.

    Electrical and Electronics Technicians Bricklayers and Masons Carpenters and Joiners Painters and Decorators Caretakers

    Daily tasks:

    • Visits and advises clients on the use and servicing of electrical and electronic systems and equipment.
    • Diagnoses and detects faults and implements procedures to maintain efficient operation of systems and equipment.
    • Plans installation methods, checks completed installation for safety and controls or undertakes the initial running of the new electrical or electronic equipment or system.
    • Sets up equipment, undertakes tests, takes readings, performs calculations and records and interprets data.
    • Plans and prepares work and test schedules based on specifications and drawings.

    • Levels, aligns and embeds stone in mortar and faces brick, concrete or steel frame with stone to make and repair structures.
    • Uses hand and power tools to shape, trim, carve, cut letters in and polish stone.

    • Marks and cuts stone using hammers, mallet and hand or pneumatic chisels.
    • Examines drawings, photographs and specifications to determine job requirements.

    • Selects and measures appropriate wood and cuts, shapes and drills to specification using saws, planes, chisels and other power or hand tools.
