If you enjoy working with your hands and are good at problem solving, a Property Maintenance Operative Apprenticeship is a great choice for you!
As a Property Maintenance Operative Apprentice, you will be trained in the mechanisms of buildings including electrical, plumbing, plant, safety systems and equipment. You will provide a first and immediate response to fault finding and assist in the prevention of major damage that could result in extensive costs and minimise reactive intervention.
With skills in property maintenance you will have the flexibility to work in a variety of industries including housing, healthcare, education, leisure, retail, and commercial properties! This will give you the opportunity to explore different career paths and find the niche that best suits your interests and goals.
A minimum of 20% of your contracted hours must be spent in off-the-job training. This is predominantly done one day per week at college but can also include training sessions.
Entry requirements:
- GCSE at grade 3 (D) or above, or equivalent in Maths and English
What will I achieve?
Upon successful completion of this apprenticeship, you will achieve a Level 2 Property Maintenance Operative qualification.

You must meet the requirements of an end-point assessment in order to be deemed competent in your job role.
How am I assessed?
Once you have completed all elements of your apprenticeship, you will enter the gateway and get ready to take your end-point assessment. The end-point assessment consists of Synoptic Knowledge Assessment, Synoptic Practical Assessment and Synoptic Interview.
Where can I progress?
Upon successful completion of the Property Maintenance Operative apprenticeship you could progress into a variety of roles such as a Technical Specialist, e.g. electrical, or plumbing, and supervisory and management roles such as a Facilities Manager across a wide range of sectors.
Apprenticeship pay:
You will be employed as a regular employee on a contract of employment for at least 30 hours per week and paid at least the National Minimum Wage for an Apprentice, currently £7.55 per hour. If you are over 19, employers can pay the National Minimum Wage for an Apprentice for the first year of the apprenticeship. After this first year, the salary rate will change to the National Minimum Wage for your age.

My responsibilities include managing four departments: Motor Vehicle, Vehicle Respraying, Bricklaying, and Property Maintenance Operations, offering qualifications ranging from Level 1 to Level 3, as well as apprenticeship programs in these areas. With a background as a fully qualified motor mechanic and vehicle respraying tutor for eight years, I bring hands-on expertise to my role in management.

Lecturer - ConstructionMy name is Kevin Jackson, and I’m one of the lecturers in Property Maintenance. I began my career here at Kidderminster College about three years ago. I was previously a student at Sandwell College, where I completed my City & Guilds Plumbing course. Before joining the college, I worked on property renovations, including fitting bathroom suites, kitchens, and carrying out a range of other domestic renovation work. I’ve always enjoyed being hands-on, and when the opportunity to join KC came up, I saw it as a great chance to pass on my skills to the next generation of tradespeople.

What can I do with a qualification in Property Maintenance Operative?
Daily tasks:
- Visits and advises clients on the use and servicing of electrical and electronic systems and equipment.
- Diagnoses and detects faults and implements procedures to maintain efficient operation of systems and equipment.
- Plans installation methods, checks completed installation for safety and controls or undertakes the initial running of the new electrical or electronic equipment or system.
- Sets up equipment, undertakes tests, takes readings, performs calculations and records and interprets data.
