Levels ExplainedMore about the course
This course is delivered in-class over two evenings per week, with each session lasting three hours, totalling six hours of study per week. Designed specifically for adult learners, this evening format offers flexibility for those with work or daytime commitments, allowing you to gain a nationally recognised qualification while balancing other responsibilities.
To achieve the full diploma, learners must complete all six of the following mandatory units:
301 Scientific principles
This unit is designed to enable learners to understand the relationship between scientific principles and the competencies required of a qualified electrical operative. Its content is the knowledge needed by a learner to underpin the application of skills in the installation and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment.
302 Inspection, testing and commissioning of electrotechnical systems and equipment
The aim of this unit is to enable learners to understand principles, practices and legislation for the initial verification of electrical installations. Learners will gain an understanding of the safe testing and commissioning of electrical installations and the requirements for completing Electrical Installation Certificates (EIC) and associated documentation. Learners will also develop the skills needed to carry out inspection and testing of electrical installations prior to being placed into service, and the skills to commission electrical systems and equipment, and report on electrical installations, including the condition of existing systems.
303 Fault finding and diagnosis 304 Electrical design practices and procedures
The aim of this unit is to enable learners to understand fault finding and diagnosis. Learners will gain an understanding of the legislative and health and safety requirements, along with the understanding required for reporting and communicating relevant information to relevant personnel. Learners will also gain the skills to undertake fault diagnosis safely and effectively.
304 Electrical Design Practices and Procedures
The aim of this unit is to enable the learner to develop the knowledge and skills required to design, prepare and install wiring systems and associated equipment in buildings, structures and the environment. Learners will gain an understanding of the electrical supply systems and consumer equipment and apply cable design procedures in accordance with approved industry practices, and statutory and non-statutory regulations.
305 Organising and overseeing electrical work activities in buildings
The aim of this unit is to enable learners to gain an understanding of organising and overseeing work programmes within the construction sector. They will explore the requirements for tendering process and costing electrical work within the construction sector. Learners will gain an understanding of the practices and procedures for working with others when organising and overseeing work activities and explore the provision and storage of resources that are required for work.
306 Understand the Requirements of Electrical Installations BS 7671:2018 (2024)
This unit gives the learner an understanding of the content of BS 7671 and how this applies to electrical installations within its scope.
How often does this course run?
The City & Guilds Level 3 Technical Occupational Entry in Electrical Installations (Diploma) (2366-03) Adult Evening Course is offered once a year, typically starting in the autumn term.
This annual schedule allows learners to plan ahead and prepare for their studies, especially those balancing work, family, or other commitments.
Entry requirements:
Learners will already hold the Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations (Buildings and Structures) (2365-02), Level 2 Technical Certificate in Electrical Installation (8202-20) or other Awarding Organisation equivalent in order to complete this qualification satisfactorily.
A good standard of English and maths is essential to understand the technical content.
What will I achieve?
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded the City & Guilds Level 3 Technical Occupational Entry in Electrical Installations (Diploma) (2366-03).
This qualification is highly regarded in the electrical industry and demonstrates that you have gained the knowledge and skills required to progress toward becoming a fully qualified electrician. It can also support applications for apprenticeships, employment, or further study, including AM2 and NVQ Level 3 routes.
What will I learn?
You will develop an in-depth understanding of electrical principles, installation practices, inspection and testing, fault diagnosis, and health and safety regulations.
The course covers both theoretical knowledge and practical skills through hands-on workshop sessions and classroom-based learning.
Topics include wiring systems, electrical science, and installation design.
You’ll also learn how to interpret technical information, apply problem-solving techniques, and work safely and efficiently in real-world scenarios.
This course is designed for adult learners looking to enter or advance in the electrical industry.
How is the course taught?
This Level 3 Diploma is delivered through a blend of theory-based classroom sessions and practical activities in a workshop environment. As an adult evening course, it is designed to be flexible and accessible for learners who may be working or have daytime commitments. The majority of the course focuses on theoretical knowledge, including electrical principles, regulations, and installation design. These topics are taught through lectures, group discussions, assignments, and tutor-led activities.
In addition to the theory, you will also take part in hands-on practical sessions in a fully equipped electrical workshop. These practical elements help reinforce your understanding and allow you to develop essential skills in wiring, containment systems, testing procedures, and fault finding. The combination of classroom learning and practical experience ensures you are well-prepared for progression into employment or further qualifications in the electrical industry.
How am I assessed?
Assessment for this Level 3 Diploma is designed to test your theoretical understanding in electrical installation. You will complete three online multiple-choice exams, each covering key areas of the course such as electrical principles, Inspection and testing, fault finding, and installation design. These exams assess your ability to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations.
In addition to the exams, you will complete a five-hour practical assessment in a workshop setting. This hands-on task will require you to demonstrate competence in inspection & testing, fault finding to ensure compliance with regulations.
You will also undertake a 20-hour assignment, which is a written and practical project designed to showcase your overall understanding of the course. This assignment allows you to apply your knowledge to a realistic electrical scenario, combining planning, and circuit design.
Course costs:
For adults in England, there's potential for free Level 3 electrical courses through the Free Courses for Jobs initiative, particularly if they are unemployed or earn below a certain income threshold. Additionally, adults aged 19+ who don't already have a Level 3 qualification may also be eligible for free training.
