Levels ExplainedMore about the course
This course introduces you to the core principles of electrical installation, including electrical science, wiring systems, health and safety, and installation technology. You will develop practical skills through hands-on tasks in a workshop environment and build your theoretical understanding through classroom-based lessons. The course is ideal for beginners or those with limited experience looking to start a career as an electrician. Regular attendance and participation are essential. Successful learners can progress to the Level 3 Diploma, an apprenticeship, or seek entry-level employment in the electrical sector. Early application is recommended due to high demand.
Unit 201 Health and safety in building services engineering
This combination unit provides learners with the essential health & safety knowledge and skills to demonstrate best practice in a business services engineering environment or sector. The unit provides learners with an awareness of relevant legislation and should underpin all business services engineering activities learners take part in.
Unit 202 Principles of Electrical Science The aim of this unit is to enable the candidate to know the basic principles of electrical science. This knowledge provides the foundation for electrical installations which can be applied when designing wiring systems for clients and when inspection and testing electrical installations.
Unit 203: Electrical installations technology
The purpose of this knowledge unit is for the candidate to gain knowledge of the underpinning principles and industry standards and requirements of electrical installation technology. They will know about sources of information and the types of information they provide about wiring systems. They will also know about earthing systems and the installation of wiring systems.
Unit 204 Installation of wiring systems and enclosures
This practical unit will develop in learners the skills required to install wiring systems to recognised standards. Learners will learn to use tools and materials effectively in completing well defined tasks for electrical installations. In addition to learning to install systems, learners will also develop skills to inspect and test wiring systems.
Unit 210 Understand how to communicate with others within building services engineering
This knowledge unit provides learning in the development and continued maintenance of effective working relationships in the building services industry associated with work in dwellings, industrial and commercial premises and for private and contract type clients.
How often does this course run?

Entry requirements:
There are no formal qualifications required to enrol on this course, but a good standard of English and maths is essential to understand the technical content. A keen interest in electrical installation and a commitment to attending regularly are important. Previous experience in a construction or technical environment may be beneficial but is not required.
What will I achieve?
Upon successful completion, you will gain the City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations (Buildings and Structures). This is a recognised industry qualification and provides the foundation for progressing to the Level 3 Diploma or an apprenticeship. You will gain practical skills and theoretical knowledge in areas such as electrical science, wiring systems, installation methods, and health and safety. This qualification is a key step toward a career in the electrical industry and helps prepare you for further training or entry-level employment in the sector.
What will I learn?
This course provides a solid foundation in the principles and practices of electrical installation. You will learn about electrical science, wiring systems and enclosures, installation technology, and health and safety within building structures. The course also introduces basic inspection and testing procedures, preparing you for progression into further study or work within the electrical industry.
How is the course taught?
The course is delivered through a combination of classroom-based theory and practical workshop sessions. You will attend two evening sessions per week, each lasting three hours. Lessons are tutor-led and include presentations, group discussions, guided activities, and hands-on practice with real tools and equipment in a safe, supervised environment. This balance helps reinforce theoretical learning with practical skills.
How am I assessed?
Assessment is carried out through four online multiple-choice exams, one written/practical assignment focused on Health & Safety, and one ten-hour practical assessment. Each unit includes a combination of these methods to test both your theoretical understanding and your ability to apply it practically. Successful completion of all units is required to achieve the full City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma, and you will receive regular feedback to support your progress.
Course costs:
For adults in England, there's potential for free Level 2 electrical courses through the free courses for jobs initiative, particularly if they are unemployed or earn below a certain income threshold.
