More about the course

On this course you will tackle fitting kitchens, roofs, skirting, double doors, flooring, ironmongery set-up, and more complicated repairs and fixes.

You will develop, enhance, and perfect the skills required to enable you to work at a more advanced level in the construction industry. You'll be honing your craft throughout this qualification, ensuring you're ready to take your next step onto the career ladder.

You'll also develop your organisational and people skills, preparing you for supervisory and managerial positions.

Entry requirements:

GCSE at grade 3 or above in English and Maths
Completion of Carpentry Level 2 or equivalent

All offers are based on suitability of the course assessed at a taster day

What will I achieve?

Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a Level 3 City & Guilds Diploma in Site Carpentry.

What will I learn?

Fitting of mouldings, flooring, and ironmongery
The set-up and use of woodworking machinery
Geometry
Practicing traditional roof cuts
Tackling more complicated first fix roofing and stairs

You will be based at the Green Technology Centre. Classes generally run between 9:00am - 5:00pm but may vary.

How am I assessed?

Complete both online and paper-based exams
Practical work and examinations

Practical assessments will include the fitting of stairs, kitchens, roofs, skirting etc

Work experience opportunities:

This course includes two weeks of work placement arranged by Kidderminster College. This will allow you to expand on your new skillset, theoretical knowledge and growing confidence and can be added to bolster your CV.

English and Maths:

English will be included in learning correct terminology and for written assignments.

Maths will be included in measuring for practical work.

Tutorial

Tutorial is a program of essential topics affecting you as a potential employee and member of a community. You will cover topics to improve employability skills, mental fitness (both for you and those around you) and much more. It is an essential part of your personal development.

As part of you weekly timetable, you will be expected to take part in Tutorial. This consists of a 1-1 meeting (at least 3 a year) and Personal Development activities that develop you both personally and professionally. Part of the focus is to raise digital Standards and take part in Employer Engagement Activities such as guest speakers, logging Work Experience and in person and online networking.

We work with Student Experience, Careers and your Curriculum team to ensure your Tutorial elements link to your industry area and to create opportunities to develop key skills for profile raising as well as enabling you to create competitive applications and CVs.

Tutorial is also an opportunity to check in with you as part of a group and individually. You can discuss any issues you might be having that affect your learning and essentially identify strategies and support available to you.

Where can I progress?

Upon successful completion of this course, you could progress onto our Pearson BTEC Level 4 in Construction Management.

Alternatively, you can go into employment or apply for an apprenticeship.

I began my career as a carpentry apprentice and contributed my skills on a new build site. I progressed to site manager, then to contract manager, for over 20 years. I always aimed to give back to an industry that had given me so much, so I became a lecturer to pass on my experience and passion for carpentry and joinery trade to the next generation.

Green Technology Centre Manager

As a dedicated Site Manager, I oversee the centre's daily operations and support learners in their journey toward achieving their qualifications. My responsibilities include managing four departments: Motor Vehicle, Vehicle Respraying, Bricklaying, and Property Maintenance Operations, offering qualifications ranging from Level 1 to Level 3, as well as apprenticeship programs in these areas. With a background as a fully qualified motor mechanic and vehicle respraying tutor for eight years, I bring hands-on expertise to my role in management.
