The VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Barbering is an occupational qualification that provides you with the knowledge, understanding and skills to work as an employed and/or self-employed barber able to work on hair combining a variety of different technical skills. This qualification is ideal for those who hold a hairdressing or barbering qualification and work in a commercial barbershop/salon.
This qualification covers specific skills necessary to work as a senior hairdresser in the men's/barber hairdressing industry. The qualification builds on existing knowledge and understanding of hairdressing and develops more detailed and enhanced technical skills necessary for employment. Your skills and techniques will be assessed in a real working environment.
How often does this course run?
This course runs one evening per week. Start date and Times to be confirmed.
You will be notified of the next available start date once you have submitted your application.
Entry requirements:
You will need to hold a Level 2 Barbering qualification.
What will I achieve?
Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a Level 3 Diploma in Barbering.
This qualification may lead directly into employment in the barbering industry as a junior stylist or to work as an independent barber
What will I learn?
There are four mandatory units in this qualification for you to study including:
- Provide client consultation services
- Creatively cut hair using a combination of barbering techniques
- Design and create a range of facial hair shapes
- Provide shaving services
How is the course taught?
The course will be delivered over 22 weeks, made up of practical classes and theory classes.
How am I assessed?
The course is delivered through practical and theory lessons.
You will receive practical demonstrations and theory input to develop your knowledge and understanding and prepare you for assessment and examination.

As a Hairdressing Lecturer, I go beyond teaching, supporting learners with critical skills and pastoral care. Daily tasks:
- Ensures financial accounts for the business are maintained.
- Demonstrates, advises on and sells hair and/or beauty products.
- Checks and maintains any equipment, and ensures that all safety requirements are met.
- Undertakes and/or directs hair treatments and/or beauty therapy.
- Ensures clients.
- Provides clients with information and advice on styles and treatments, and resolves any complaints or problems.
- Controls the allocation, training and remuneration of staff.
- Determines staffing, financial, material and other short- and long-term needs.

- Demonstrates, sells and recommends hair care products to clients and advises them on hair care.
- Ensures hair products are stored and used appropriately and observes relevant health and safety factors.
- Maintains client records and keeps up-to-date with new products, styles and techniques.
- Collects payment, arranges appointments and cleans and tidies salon.
- Shaves and trims beards and moustaches.
- Combs, brushes, blow-dries or sets wet hair in rollers to style or straighten.
- Cuts and trims hair using scissors, clippers, razor and comb.
- Washes, conditions, bleaches, tints or dyes hair and provides any necessary basic scalp treatments.
- Discusses customer requirements, analyses hair condition and other relevant features to define and advise on hair style.

- Advises clients on diet and exercise to assist in weight loss and slimming.

- Applies make-up to hide blemishes or enhance facial features and advises clients on skin care and make-up techniques.
- Cleans, shapes and polishes finger and toe nails, applies nail extensions.
