Our Construction department boasts a rich history of providing hands-on practical experience. With the recent addition of our purpose-built Construction and Automotive Green Technology Centre, located just a 5-minute drive from the main campus, you will have access to cutting-edge facilities and study spaces that will elevate their education.
We offer both full-time and part-time courses, along with apprenticeships and a higher education programme, ensuring there's a course for you.
All of our courses are taught by instructors boasting years of industry experience, ensuring that you can gain up-to-date insights into your selected trade. You will also have the chance to work with cutting-edge equipment.

What can I do with a qualification in Construction?
Daily tasks:
- Visits and advises clients on the use and servicing of electrical and electronic systems and equipment.
- Diagnoses and detects faults and implements procedures to maintain efficient operation of systems and equipment.
- Plans installation methods, checks completed installation for safety and controls or undertakes the initial running of the new electrical or electronic equipment or system.
- Sets up equipment, undertakes tests, takes readings, performs calculations and records and interprets data.
- Plans and prepares work and test schedules based on specifications and drawings.

Daily tasks:
- Levels, aligns and embeds stone in mortar and faces brick, concrete or steel frame with stone to make and repair structures.
- Uses hand and power tools to shape, trim, carve, cut letters in and polish stone.
- Spreads mortar on foundations and bricks, and places, levels and aligns bricks in mortar bed.
- Marks and cuts stone using hammers, mallet and hand or pneumatic chisels.
- Examines drawings, photographs and specifications to determine job requirements.

Daily tasks:
- Maintains and repairs woodwork and fittings.
- Checks accuracy of work with square, rule and spirit level.
- Aligns and fixes prepared wood pieces by screwing, nailing, gluing and dowelling to form frames, shop fronts, counter units, decking, theatrical sets, furniture, small wooden craft, scale models and wooden templates.
- Selects and measures appropriate wood and cuts, shapes and drills to specification using saws, planes, chisels and other power or hand tools.
- Examines drawings and specifications to determine job requirements.

- Mixes adhesive or removes self-adhesive backing and positions covering material on wall, matching up patterns where appropriate and removing wrinkles and air bubbles by hand or brush.
- Applies primer, undercoat and finishing coat(s) using brush, roller, or spray equipment.
- Prepares surfaces by cleaning, sanding and filling cracks and holes with appropriate filler.
- Erects working platform or scaffolding up to five metres in height.

David Jones
Tutor - CarpentryI began my career as a carpentry apprentice and contributed my skills on a new build site. I progressed to site manager, then to contract manager, for over 20 years. I always aimed to give back to an industry that had given me so much, so I became a lecturer to pass on my experience and passion for carpentry and joinery trade to the next generation.
Adam Clayton
Head of DepartmentWhen I left school at 16, I started an apprenticeship in Electrical Installation at West Bromwich College. After many years in the electrical trade, working for my Dad and also a stint as a self-employed person, I decided to take up an offer of a job in education. Working as a tutor and passing on my skills and knowledge became my passion. I found much pleasure and joy in teaching the next generation of electricians.
Adam Griffin
Curriculum ManagerAs a dedicated Site Manager, I oversee the centre's daily operations and support learners in their journey toward achieving their qualifications. My responsibilities include managing four departments: Motor Vehicle, Vehicle Respraying, Bricklaying, and Property Maintenance Operations, offering qualifications ranging from Level 1 to Level 3, as well as apprenticeship programs in these areas. With a background as a fully qualified motor mechanic and vehicle respraying tutor for eight years, I bring hands-on expertise to my role in management.
