Combining college learning with real industry experience

Meg Lewis chose the T Level in Early Years at Kidderminster College because she knew she wanted to work with children and eventually become a primary school teacher. The opportunity to combine classroom learning with real industry experience particularly appealed to her.

Her hard work has paid off, with Meg achieving an A* in both her Core Exam and Employer Set Project*.

Meg told us: “I liked that the course combined learning in college with real experience in an industry placement.”

Gaining valuable experience in a primary school

Meg’s industry placement took place in a primary school, where she supported children with activities, worked with pupils one-to-one and gained an insight into how teachers plan and adapt their teaching.

The experience helped build her confidence and confirmed that teaching is the career she wants to pursue. She particularly valued learning how important it is to understand each child as an individual and adapt the support they receive.

Said explained: “It helped me realise even more that teaching is what I want to do in the future.”

A proud Results Day achievement

Meg was delighted to discover she had achieved an A* in both her Core Exam and Employer Set Project, particularly as she had found some parts of the course challenging.

Meg said: “Seeing my results on Results Day and finding out I had achieved an A* in both components was such a proud moment. It made me realise how much my hard work had paid off.”

Alongside her academic achievement, Meg has developed her confidence, independence, communication, teamwork and organisation skills through her T Level and industry placement.

Looking ahead

Meg is continuing into her second year before hoping to progress to university in 2027 to study Primary Education with QTS. Her long-term ambition is to become a primary school teacher, particularly working with younger children, and she hopes to support children with SEND.

“A T Level gives you the opportunity to learn the theory behind what you’re doing but also gain real industry experience, which I think is really valuable.” Meg explained.
