Anastasija Drozdova, a Level 3 UAL Art, Design and Communication student at Kidderminster College, has produced an ambitious and thought provoking Final Major Project that has helped secure her progression to university.

Titled Distance Travelled, the project explores complex political and historical themes, focusing on how individuals and groups have been controlled, oppressed and, in some cases, persecuted by powerful organisations throughout history. Through her work, Anastasija challenges audiences to reflect on a difficult question: why, despite everything we know, do these patterns still continue today?

Taking a unique and creative approach, Anastasija presented her ideas through a Manga comic. The narrative follows two working men on a night shift, whose conversations gradually unpack wider global issues. By grounding these themes in everyday dialogue, the comic creates an accessible and engaging way for readers to connect with challenging subject matter.

The project demonstrates not only strong artistic ability, but also a willingness to explore meaningful and complex topics through visual storytelling. Reflecting on the process, Anastasija said:

“I have enjoyed this process, however it has been very difficult at times creating the whole Manga, but worth it.”

Her dedication and creativity have been recognised with a confirmed place on a BA Honours Illustration course at Arts University Plymouth, where she will continue to develop her skills and build a future in the creative industries.

Courses such as Art and Design at Kidderminster College are designed to support students in developing both their technical ability and their individual voice as artists. Anastasija’s work is a strong example of how students are encouraged to think critically, take creative risks and produce work that reflects their ideas and ambitions.

We look forward to seeing what she achieves next as she takes this exciting step forward in her creative journey.
