Animal Management HE Level 4

Aimee Morgan

Aimee is a Higher Education student studying Level 4 HNC Animal Management at Kidderminster College, and has now been offered a job as a Farm Assistant at Churchfields Farm in Droitwich .

What do you like about studying at Kidderminster College?

I like the variety of lessons and placements. The lessons are well planned out and it’s easy to keep up with the work. The placements have been a great experience and have allowed me to gain enough work experience to get a job.

What have you gained from the course?

Thanks to the knowledge I have gained and the experience from the work placements, it has allowed me to gain enough hands on experience to be able to get a job on a farm.

What’s a typical day working at the farm?

I work on a farm with cows, sheep, horses, donkeys, goats and pigs. My job involves all animal husbandry tasks such as feeding and mucking out, as well as talking to visitors about the animals. I help around all the areas of the farm, no day is the same. I have also been involved in lambing, where I got to deliver lots of lambs, and also bottle feed some of them. Thanks to having the knowledge I have from my course, it has allowed me to go on and gain further certificates through my employer, such as learning how to administer medication.

What’s been your biggest achievement and biggest challenge whilst studying?

My biggest achievement is handling animals which I thought I never would, such as tarantulas and lizards, the work placements have allowed me to gain experience to be able to confidently handle these animals. I have also overcome my fears of the bigger animals at work (cows, highland cows, donkeys, horses), and I can now happily work with them in their enclosures.

The biggest challenge is time management, I have two young children, so trying to juggle college, work and childcare has been a challenge.

Do you have any advice for future Higher Education students?

Take every opportunity you can while you have the resources at college, and make the most of the work placements as it is a great learning experience. The work placements allow you to work with a huge variety of animals, which may give you an idea of what kind of job you would like to do in the future.
