Our UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Game is a two-year full-time course. The first year (Diploma) is strongly focused on building a strong foundation of game design theory and a workable proficiency with game design software. You will continuously build upon these skills through several projects throughout the year, leading to your final major project (FMP), in which you will create an exciting, playable game of your very own.

In your second year (Extended Diploma), you will choose and focus on a specialism, going much deeper on it than was previously possible and studying it until your FMP. During your FMP. you will work with students of other specialisms to create a game together - simulating the experience of working in a game design studio. We cover all aspects of game development, so specialisms might include programming, 3d modelling, concept art, level design, narrative, or any of the other disciplines that go into creating a video game.

Although you don’t need any previous game design experience to apply, creative and computing skills will help. You should also be interested in a variety of games and genres, as you will be often drawing upon your own experience and passion. Above all, you need to be curious, willing to learn, and passionate about the industry.

The curriculum is taught and developed by experienced industry professionals and informed by conversations with developers at leading companies such as Epic Games and Riot Games.

UAL (University of the Arts London) are the UK’s leading Creative Industries awarding body. They have designed their suite of qualifications with education and industry partners, to provide students with the latest knowledge and skills, and enable students to progress to higher education or employment.

Entry requirements

You will hold 4 GCSE’s at grade 4 or above including English and Maths.

Alternatively, you will hold a Level 2 Diploma at Merit grade in the subject.

You will successfully complete a mandatory interview with either an audition or portfolio of work.

What will I achieve?

Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a Level 3 Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology (Games Design Pathway), which is equivalent to three A-Levels.

Classes generally run between 9am-4:15pm but may vary.

How am I assessed?

There are no exams with UAL qualifications. All modules are assessed at Pass/Referral only until your final units which are graded Pass/Merit/Distinction, Final Major Project (FMP) - in which all the knowledge and skills you have developed over the course are put to use in a project designed by you and the tutors to showcase your unique skills and thus maximise your potential in terms of your final grade.

Work experience opportunities

As part of your course, you will be required to complete a period of work experience. This forms an essential component of your overall study hours and is designed to support your learning and progression. The number of hours you need to complete will vary depending on the level and type of qualification you are undertaking. There is an expectation that your placement will be relevant to your chosen course, helping you gain valuable insight and practical skills in your subject area. While learners are expected to secure their own placement, our dedicated Work Experience Coordinator will support you throughout the process and ensure that all placements meet the necessary compliance and safeguarding requirements.

English and maths

If you're aged 16-18 and haven't achieved a GCSE grade 4/C in English and maths, you are likely to be encouraged to study Level 2 instead as you will need to take English and maths classes alongside your programme of study.

English is embedded verbally, written in analysis, and in group discussions. English skills are also evaluated within presentations of work, where spelling and grammar are checked and the layout of presentations must be professional. As Level 3 prepares you for university, your academic writing skills will be pushed and improved upon to that level.

Maths is embedded within sessions when considering 3D geometry, logical thinking in programming, data analysis, and similar.

Tutorial

Tutorial is a program of essential topics affecting you as a potential employee and member of a community. You will cover topics to improve employability skills, mental fitness (both for you and those around you) and much more. It is an essential part of your personal development.

As part of you weekly timetable, you will be expected to take part in Tutorial. This consists of a 1-1 meeting (at least 3 a year) and Personal Development activities that develop you both personally and professionally. Part of the focus is to raise digital Standards and take part in Employer Engagement Activities such as guest speakers, logging Work Experience and in person and online networking.

We work with Student Experience, Careers and your Curriculum team to ensure your Tutorial elements link to your industry area and to create opportunities to develop key skills for profile raising as well as enabling you to create competitive applications and CVs.

Tutorial is also an opportunity to check in with you as part of a group and individually. You can discuss any issues you might be having that affect your learning and essentially identify strategies and support available to you.

Where can I progress?

Upon completion of the course, you will have been prepared with the skills to progress into either university or the world of work. As Game Design covers a wide variety of skills, knowledge, and behaviours, you will be suitable for an equally wide variety of jobs and university courses.

Some students have gone to study Game Design at university, but others have branched into cybersecurity, fashion design, and art – to name a few.
