UAL Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology (Games Design) is a two-year full-time course. The first year (Diploma) is strongly focused on building skills in games design software which you will continuously build upon through several modular units leading to your final major project (FMP). Your second year (Extended Diploma) will focus purely on your own specialism, where you will study this specialism through several modular units leading to your own project FMP.

You don't need any previous experience designing games to apply for this course, but you'll need a creative mind. You should also be interested in many different genres of games which play on different platforms, as you'll be required to draw upon your own user experience.

You will cover all aspects of game development, not just focusing on one area but considering and dissecting all components of game development, you'll find a genuine appreciation of the different elements that go into the making of a game.

4 GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including English and maths.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology (Games Design), which is equivalent to three A-Levels.

Classes generally run between 9am-4:15pm but may vary.

How am I assessed?

There are no exams with UAL qualifications. All modules are assessed at Pass/Referral only until your final units which are graded Pass/Merit/Distinction, Final Major Project (FMP) - in which all the knowledge and skills you have developed over the course are put to use in a project designed by you and the tutors to showcase your unique skills and thus maximise your potential in terms of your final grade.

Work experience opportunities

You'll get the chance to work on live project briefs set by current industry specialists and work closely with universities. You will get the opportunity to present your work gaining invaluable industry feedback. In addition, there will be opportunities to engage with competitions and Game Jams.

English and maths

If you're aged 16-18 and haven't achieved a GCSE grade 4/C in English and maths, you'll need to take English and maths classes alongside your programme of study.

English is embedded into your course verbally, through written presentations, written analysis and group discussions. Also, you'll be evaluated during your work presentations, especially on correct spelling and grammar and ensuring the professional layout of your presentations.

Maths is embedded within sessions when working out resolutions, proportions, ratios, percentages and FPS (Frames Per Second). Also, mathematically-presented work will be required throughout this course.

Tutorial

Tutorial is a program of essential topics affecting you as a potential employee and member of a community. You will cover topics to improve employability skills, mental fitness (both for you and those around you) and much more. It is an essential part of your personal development.

As part of you weekly timetable, you will be expected to take part in Tutorial. This consists of a 1-1 meeting (at least 3 a year) and Personal Development activities that develop you both personally and professionally. Part of the focus is to raise digital Standards and take part in Employer Engagement Activities such as guest speakers, logging Work Experience and in person and online networking.

We work with Student Experience, Careers and your Curriculum team to ensure your Tutorial elements link to your industry area and to create opportunities to develop key skills for profile raising as well as enabling you to create competitive applications and CVs.

Tutorial is also an opportunity to check in with you as part of a group and individually. You can discuss any issues you might be having that affect your learning and essentially identify strategies and support available to you.
