Students build skills and confidence through General Operative Skills Bootcamp

Two students at Kidderminster College have successfully completed the General Operative Skills Bootcamp, taking important steps towards careers in the construction industry.

Michael Williams and Leo Baldwin completed the course, which is designed to equip learners with the essential skills, qualifications and confidence needed to work on site.

Michael joined the bootcamp to renew his CSCS card and return to the construction industry, where he has over 15 years of experience working as a shopfitter and carpenter. Although he had previously held a CSCS card, renewing it was a key requirement to secure work again.

During the course, Michael gained new knowledge in health and safety and completed his first aid training. He shared that the experience significantly boosted his confidence, helping him feel more comfortable and prepared when returning to site work. He also highlighted the brickwork element of the course as a particular highlight.

Michael said: “The course has really boosted my confidence and helped me get back on site and earning again.”

Leo, 22, enrolled on the bootcamp after struggling to find work due to a lack of relevant skills. After discovering the opportunity to gain a CSCS card through the course, he decided to take the next step and enrol.

During his time on the bootcamp, Leo developed practical skills in areas such as bricklaying, fencing and joinery. Alongside this, he improved his communication skills and confidence, while staying active through hands on learning.

Leo said: “I’ve learned skills I never thought I would and it’s really helped build my confidence for the future.”

Both learners spoke positively about their experience, highlighting how the course helped them move closer to employment and feel more prepared for the workplace.

The General Operative Skills Bootcamp is designed to support individuals looking to start a career in construction or return to the industry, providing a strong foundation of practical skills and essential qualifications.

For Michael and Leo, the course has made a real difference, giving them the tools, knowledge and confidence to take the next step into employment.
