From Student to Coach and Entrepreneur: Gorgi’s Journey into the Football Industry

Gorgi Makazliev started his journey studying Higher Education at Kidderminster College, whilst also gaining valuable experience as a youth team coach and academy Strength and Conditioning coach.

A former Kidderminster College student is already building an exciting career in the football industry, combining university study, coaching experience and business ownership.

Gorgi Makazliev started his journey studying Higher Education at Kidderminster College, whilst also gaining valuable experience as a youth team coach and academy Strength and Conditioning coach.

Reflecting on his time at college, he said it helped him realise the direction he wanted to take:

“I knew I wanted a career in sport performance and coaching.”

He has since progressed to the University of Worcester, where he is currently studying BSc Sport and Exercise Science. His degree covers key areas including strength and conditioning, physiology, performance analysis, nutrition and sports psychology, giving him a strong understanding of how athletes develop both physically and mentally.

Speaking about his studies, Gorgi said:

“This degree has helped me understand how athletes actually improve physically and mentally.”

Alongside his studies, Gorgi has gained valuable hands-on experience within football. He currently works as a youth team coach and academy Strength and Conditioning coach, supporting the development of players through focused work on speed, agility, strength and overall athletic performance.

Demonstrating initiative and drive, Gorgi has also launched his own coaching business, Makaz Pro. Through this, he delivers one to one training, athletic development sessions and performance programmes, and is already working with a growing number of young players.

Reflecting on starting his own business while studying, he said:

“You don’t have to wait until you graduate to start something.”

In addition to his work in sport, Gorgi has developed valuable transferable skills through his role at EE, where he holds senior sales and leadership responsibilities. This experience has strengthened his communication, confidence and business understanding, all of which support his work in coaching and running a business.

Reflecting on his journey, Gorgi encourages current students to take opportunities early and gain experience wherever possible. He said:

“Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Opportunities come from putting yourself out there.”

Gorgi’s progression highlights the value of combining education with real world experience, and the opportunities available to students who are willing to take initiative.

Gorgi’s journey highlights what is possible with the right combination of education and experience. For those looking to follow a similar path, the FdSc Physical Education and Sports Coaching programme at Kidderminster College, delivered in partnership with the Kidderminster Harriers, provides the opportunity to develop the skills and experience needed for a successful career in the sport industry.
