Amelia Bennett

Former Kidderminster College HE Animal Management student Amelia Bennett is now thriving in her dream role as a Hoof Stock Keeper at Longleat Safari Park.

During her time on the course, Amelia gained hands-on experience, built confidence through voluntary work and took part in a range of practical sessions that helped shape her future career path. She also had the opportunity to visit key industry settings, including Dudley Zoo, Cotswold Wildlife Park and South Africa, further strengthening her understanding of the sector.

Amelia shared her journey with us:

“During my HE Animal Management course, I was encouraged to apply for a position as a Hoof Stock Keeper at Longleat Safari Park. I went for the interview, and seven months later, I’m still in my dream job! I now work with an incredible range of species, from lemurs and macaques to camels, giraffes and rhinos.

I completed many voluntary positions, which helped me gain confidence with both the animals and the public. Practical experiences at college, such as correct handling techniques and mucking out, and specific modules, helped me determine that this was definitely the career for me, helping shape me to land my dream role. Trips to Dudley Zoo, Cotswold Wildlife Park and South Africa gave me insight into the role and helped me decide on my career path. These experiences allowed me to use transferable skills in different environments and develop them even further.

Now, my everyday work includes animal training, patrolling reserves and husbandry tasks for these amazing animals. As a result of my experience at the park, I’m now a fully trained rhino keeper, and I’m so grateful for the support that encouraged me to go for this position.”

We’re incredibly proud of everything Amelia has achieved since completing her studies at Kidderminster College. Her story is a fantastic example of where dedication, experience and the right training can lead and we can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next.
