Kidderminster College construction students from various programs were given an exclusive first look at their new educational facility, set to open in September 2024.

The Construction and Automotive Green Technology Centre on Stourport Road promises to revolutionise hands-on learning and provide state-of-the-art resources for aspiring construction professionals.

During the tour, staff and students could explore the new workshops for brickwork, electrical, motor vehicle, vehicle respraying and property maintenance. They are equipped with the latest industry-standard machinery.

"I cannot wait to get in here and complete my next level at the new centre," said Dominic Smith who studies Motor Vehicle Level 2 at the college. "There is a lot more space to learn and the environment is much more appealing to learn in!"

Adam Griffin, Centre Manager for Construction and Automotive Technology said: "Our goal is to create an environment where students can seamlessly transition from classroom learning to real-world application. This new centre is equipped with everything we need to ensure our students are not only competent but also confident as they enter the construction industry."

The £1.5 million project is being funded through a joint bid via the Government’s Getting Building Fund through Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership and Kidderminster College

Developed in direct response to the growing shortage of construction and automotive skills within the Wyre Forest and wider Worcestershire region, the new centre will place green technology and sustainability at its heart, through modern methods of construction and skills training to accommodate the rapid rise in electric and hybrid vehicles.

Cat Lewis, Principal of Kidderminster College, said: “The facility will provide a cutting-edge space for learners to learn using the latest equipment and modern methods of construction and will enable us to put green skills and sustainability at the centre of our curriculum.”

She added: “Our vision for Kidderminster College is to be an exceptional local college, making a real difference to the lives and opportunities of our community, and this centre will open a wealth of opportunities to further develop and align our curriculum through the expansion of Higher Technical Qualifications, T-Levels and industry-based professional qualifications, all of which futureproof our local and regional workforce.”

Construction works on the new Centre commenced in April 2023 and is expected to open its doors to students in 2024.
