PROMOTE CONFIDENCE & KNOWLEDGE

Last Tuesday, #TeamKC played host to local charity ‘Our Way Self- Advocacy.’ Their aim is simple, to enable and promote the confidence and knowledge of young people so that they can develop their own advocacy skills.

Their motto is ‘Speaking up and breaking down barriers’.

OUR WAY SELF-ADVOCACY

Our Way Self- Advocacy was first set up as ‘Kidderminster First Group’ in the early 1990’s, before joining forces with ‘Oneside Advocacy’  in 2008 to become ‘Our Way Self-Advocacy, ever since then they have been going from strength to strength!

The charity run a variety of groups:-

STARS IN THE SKY

DY10

Our Way Self Advocacy run DY10, an exclusive night out for people aged 18 or over who have a disability. Our Way want to give people who have a learning disability the chance to experience the nightclub scene so they feel confident ordering drinks, dancing and making new friends.

SAFE PLACE SCHEME

Our Way also run the ‘Safe Place Scheme’  aimed at giving vulnerable people a short term ‘Safe Place’ to go if they are feeling threatened or upset when out and about in their local town. Shops, businesses and public buildings who are listed as a safe place will display this sticker in their window.

MENS HEALTH AND WELLBEING GROUP

This is a new group which meets on the first Thursday of each month. They chat about issues faced by men’s health, from keeping fit, good hygiene, and looking clean and smart, to coping with stress/anxiety and healthy eating, Our Way have also hired a professional councillor that can book one to one sessions.

SELF-ADVOCACY

Self- advocacy means speaking up for yourself about important things that may stop you having the same opportunities in life that most people take for granted.

It also means doing things for yourself, making changes happen, talking about problems, knowing your rights and responsibilities, making friends and having fun.
