KC Memoirs of Lockdown – Week 8 18/05/2020

KC UNDER LOCKDOWN

For Week 8 of KC At Home, we thought we’d bring you the KC Teaching Lockdown Memoirs!

With little time to prepare, our world class tutors stepped into action, devising inventive, resourceful and engaging ways to teach during quarantine! But, as we all know, not everything runs smoothly during lockdown!

KEEP ADAPTING

Take a look at how some of our tutors and lecturers have adapted to teaching in an online classroom…

A NEW WAY OF TEACHING

I have been using a combination of tools, nearpod to do lessons (you can add your existing PowerPoint) and then tweak them to include quiz’s and other things. Along with performing practical tasks over teams, the students that have participated have enjoyed the content. — GAMES DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT TUTOR

STAYING IN TOUCH

I use teams to post messages, send students documents and links to online tools that I use to teach lessons with such as Nearpod, which allows students to engage in a range of activities, Google docs, which I use for learners to collaborate together directly onto a document, quizlet, socrative and kahoot. I also use online presentation tools which students can work from at their own pace. – HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE TUTOR

GETTING PRACTICAL

Lockdown posed a particular problem for our Creative Industries team, they’re very practical, hands-on courses.

But a bit of quarantine hasn’t stopped them! With lessons delivered over Skype, Teams and Instagram LIVE, our CI students are as active and as creative as ever! And it’s also rather nice seeing some different faces for a change!

BUT ALSO HAVE A LAUGH…

There’s been a few incidents over the past few weeks that will stick with us forever, and during this uncertain time, laughter is the best medicine!

WE CAN HEAR YOU…

The funniest thing that keeps happening is when I’m on video conference in Teams and the students have headphones on is there parents are talking in the background, asking them to ask me questions, telling siblings off, gossiping about the neighbours etc. thinking I can’t hear because they have headphones on!

QUARANTINE CATWALK…

One of the things that has had me in stitches is the occasional cameo from a parent trotting around in their dressing gown in the background of a Teams call, although now we’re in Week 8, it isn’t happening quite so much!

WFH CO-WORKERS…

During one of our early maths and English Teams meetings, my five year old son decided that he was going to ask Alexa to play Eminem – Godzilla at max volume! Awkward!

WE’VE ALL DONE IT…

One of my students hasn’t been getting out of bed until 2pm! So he put his laptop ready for our Microsoft teams lesson on his bedside table with an alarm to be prepared! Sadly, he wasn’t up in time, so joined us late, and all we could see was his ceiling light for over an hour and an occasional grunt!

THANK YOU

We can’t even begin to put into words how amazing our tutors and students have been over the past 8 weeks, we’re all still learning to adapt to these difficult circumstances, we’re all still trying our hardest to bring you the best we can bring you and help you navigate a pretty uncertain time.
