LAND BASED x HARVEY’S FARM SHOP

Our Land-Based and Conservation students were in for a treat on Tuesday when they visited Harvey’s Farm Shop.

Situated on the Dunley Road near Great Witley, Harvey’s Farm Shop offers a stunning setting for the local community to travel to in order to source fresh, locally grown meat and crops. Run by Matthew and Steven, the large plot allows for their animals to enjoy an excellent quality of life, offering woodland birds to live and thrive in, as well as fields for animals and wildlife to forage in. As well as offering a safe environment for wildlife, Harvey’s Farm Shop also rears and looks after donkeys, chickens, geese and cows.

NEW VENTURE

This exciting, new partnership opens up a huge succession of energising opportunities and course specific skills for the students. Offering the chance to learn how to create their own produce, such as homemade jams and preserves, harvesting their own crops and learning how to tend to their own bees in order to make honey.

With self-sufficiency, climate change and the importance of buying local produce never far from the news in this day and age, our students get to experience first-hand the processes, procedures and craft involved in producing their own crop; as well as gaining experience in selling the fruits of their hard work to the local and college community.

WORKING TOGETHER

Chris Millington, course tutor “It’s a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn the processes of the land and really get to know the methods involved in producing the food we eat. It’s a completely new and unique opportunity for our students to engage with the college community and learn some great professional skills within a land based profession.

We will be working with Steven and Matthew on a regular basis to provide locally grown food to the college whilst also attaining their qualification.”
