Animal Care Diploma – Level 1

As the only college in the UK to be partnered with West Midlands Safari Park, our Animal Care qualifications speak for themselves.  With hands-on experience in such a unique place, paired with theoretical in-class lessons taught by industry experts, and assisting at both the Blue Cross and at Ray's Farm, this course is ideal for those with a passion for caring for animals.

This Level 1 Diploma on one of our most popular courses aims to provide you with the basic skills and knowledge to work within a supervised role and is perfect if you are just starting out on your animal care journey.

Providing the groundwork for you to expand upon during your Level 2 and Level 3 Diploma's, this course is your first step into an extremely rewarding career.

  • What will be studied
    • Assist with the care of animals and principles of the care of animals
    • Principles of dealing with feedstuffs for small animals and assist with feedstuffs for small animals
    • Assist with animal accommodation
    • Maintain the safety of self and others in the workplace
    • Assist with maintaining structures and surfaces and principles of maintaining structures and surfaces
    • Provide controlled exercise opportunities for animals.
  • What are the entry requirements?

    There are no formal requirements for entry onto this course, however, you will be required to have:

    • A good standard of numeracy and literacy
    • A passion for working with animals
    • Ability to work in a team
    • A can do attitude
  • Where does this course lead to?

    This Level 1 Diploma is the perfect springboard into Animal Care Level 2 which will open doors to a huge array of careers such as:-

    • Animal technician/assistant
    • Animal centre/shelter worker
    • Kennel or cattery worker
    • Pet shop assistant
    • Dog groomer
    • Farm worker (livestock)
    • Gamekeeper
    • Horse groom
    • Animal physiotherapist
    • Animal technician
  • What qualifications will be gained?

    At the end of this one year course you will achieve a Level 1 Diploma in Work Based Animal Care.

  • How will this course be delivered?

    Tackling both practical work and academic theory, you will divide your time between Kidderminster College main campus and West Midlands Safari Park (which is just up the road from the college).

    And yes, you will have to get involved in mucking out the animals!

  • How will I be assessed?

    Assessment for this Level 1 Diploma will revolve around portfolio work.

    There are no formal requirements, however, a reasonable standard of literacy and numeracy, a suitable level of general education and an appropriate reference will be required.

    You will be required to attend an interview at the college to assess your suitability for the course.

    While on the course we would expect you to bring equipment to classes to assist with completing lesson tasks, such as;

    • Pens
    • Pencils
    • Memory stick
    • Notepad

    Due to the nature of the course, you will be spending a considerable amount of time outside and in potentially adverse weather conditions. We ask that you bare this in mind and dress appropriately, warmly and invest in some waterproofs.
