Music Performance Level 3

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music Performance is a highly popular, industry-led course, which offers learners the opportunity to develop the skillset and knowledge to work within the music industry. Learners study under industry specialist staff, who have many years of experience in writing, performing, recording and releasing music in a wide range of genres and are currently professionally active.

Working in the music industry requires a wide range of skills and many professional musicians are successful because they are competent in multiple areas of the industry. Our course recognises this and as well as studying performance and technique classes to improve your instrumental or vocal abilities, you will also study music history, the music business and music production.

The course is aimed at learners of all ages and levels of experience that have ability or experience in Music Performance. Students are expected to perform in different genres such as rock, pop, prog, folk, acoustic, electronic etc.


  • What will be studied

    You will study across our dedicated music performance and practice suites and two professional digital recording studios. Units over the two years include: Planning for a career in music, rehearsal skills & live music performance, session musician, music improvisation, composing music & lyrics, practical musicianship, ear training, rhythmic reading, studio sound recording, understanding musical influences & styles, contextualising music and the evolution of the recording industry.

  • What are the entry requirements?

    5 GCSEs at grade 4 (formerly grade C) or above, which should ideally include English and Maths, alternatively completion of a Level 2 qualification in the subject area, with an overall Merit profile. A passion for the subject and the potential to work independently and with others, is essential. You will need to attend an interview and an audition or present a portfolio of work appropriate to the subject area. During this process, individual circumstances where learners do not fully meet the entry requirements may be considered.

  • Where does this course lead to?

    Successful completion of the qualification will give you the opportunity to progress on to our HND Music Performance or other university courses.

    Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma for Music Practitioners


  • How will this course be delivered?

    The course is run across four days.

  • How will I be assessed?

    Assessment is continuous in class rehearsals, performance and coursework. There are also internal and external assessments set by the awarding body.

    Learners are responsible for their own instruments and associated hardware/leads/cables etc.

    Microphones are provided in performance and rehearsal rooms however we advise vocalists purchase their own microphones and mic cables. Staff can advise on purchases after the course starts.
