Public Services Diploma – Level 3

During this final year of your Diploma, you will gain a solid understanding of the skills and demands required for a career in the public services, learning about a range of subjects such as leadership, health and lifestyle, citizenship, politics and law, all which are essential components for a career in the public sector. 

You will have the opportunity to take part in activities which will enhance your understanding of a career in the industry; for example, opportunities to go on residential visits to develop team work and leadership skills, experiencing outdoor activities including water based, or meeting a range of guest speakers from the Army, Navy and the Police and participating in recruitment events.

This qualification will provide you with a solid foundation to see you step up and achieve your dream career.

  • What will be studied

    A combination of some of the below:

    • Government, policies and public services
    • Leadership and teamwork in public services
    • Citizenship, diversity and public services
    • Skills for water based outdoor and adventurous activities
    • Skills for land based outdoor and adventurous activities
    • Outdoor and adventurous expeditions
    • Police powers the public services
    • Fitness testing and training for the uniformed public services
    • Communication and technology in the public services
    • Instructing physical activity
    • Current and media affairs in public services
    • Understanding the impact of war, conflict and terrorism on public services
    • Understanding discipline in the uniformed public services
    • Functional Skills or GCSE in English and Maths depending on previous qualifications
  • What are the entry requirements?

    In order to be considered for this rewarding, but demanding course you will need to:-

    • Have a minimum of 4 GCSE passes at grade 3 or above, preferably Science, English and Maths
    • Or a BTEC of other equivalent foundation level course awarded at a pass grade
    • A keen interest in working in the public sector
    • Good physical health
    • Have a strong work ethic
    • Be able to problem-solve
    • Enjoy working as part of a team
    • Be self-motivated
    • Be practically minded

    You will be required to attend an interview to ascertain your suitability for the course.

  • Where does this course lead to?

    On completion of this course, you will be capable of progressing on to Level 3 Public Services

    Career progression opportunities include:-

    • RAF or Army
    • Fire Service
    • Police or Prison Service
    • Outdoor Pursuits Instructor
  • What qualifications will be gained?

    At the end of this one year programme you will gain a Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Public Services

  • How will this course be delivered?

    This practical based course will be delivered through:-

    • Presentations
    • Task-based exercises
    • Practical demonstrations
    • 1:1 support
    • Tutorials and lectures

    This study programme will be taught over 16 hours over four days and will be delivered at Kidderminster College Main Campus and at a number of sporting facilities within the local area.   

    Classes generally run between 9am-5pm but may vary.

    Timetables will be given to all students during enrolment and induction week.

    You will be required to complete a work experience placement, which the college will organise for you, of a minimum of 180 hours across the academic year

  • How will I be assessed?

    Throughout this course, you will be assessed on each unit via:-

    • Practical assignments
    • Coursework
    • Presentations
    • Class work

    You will be awarded a pass or a fail on successful completion of each unit.
