Public Services Diploma – Level 2

This is an ideal qualification for those interested in a career within the Uniformed Services, such as the Fire Service, Police or Military. You will study topics like crime and its effects on society, improving health & fitness and employment in the uniformed services.

You'll participate in a diverse range of theoretical and practical activities ranging from fitness testing and training to government policies and the management of major incidents.

Visits are made to army barracks, RAF bases and training grounds so that students can develop a better understanding of what it means to represent the uniformed services.

Physical fitness is very important in many of these roles, along with good communication, team working and problem-solving skills. We use a number of facilities in the local area

In addition to the core part of the course you'll also have the opportunity to complete a variety of qualifications and activities alongside your studies

This course ultimately allows for progression to HND or Degree level qualifications in a variety of disciplines.

• What will be studied

  The course is made up of topics such as:

  • Government, policies and the public services

  • Citizenship, diversity and the public services
  • Understanding discipline in the uniformed public services
  • Fitness testing and training for the uniformed public services.

  You will also study a range of specialist units chosen from the following:

  • Physical preparation, health and lifestyle for the public services
  • International institutions and human rights
  • Understand the impact of war, conflict and terrorism on public services
  • Outdoor and adventurous expeditions
  • Skills for land-based outdoor and adventurous activities
  • Skills for water-based outdoor and adventurous activities • Crime and its effects on society
  • Command and control in the uniformed public services
  • Responding to emergency service incidents
  • Planning and management of major incidents
  • Career planning for the public services
  • Police powers in the public services 
  • Communication and technology in the uniformed public services
  • Custodial care services
  • Aspects of the legal system and law making process
  • Extended research in public services
  • Current and media affairs in public services
  • Security procedures in the public services
  • Practical team sports.
• What are the entry requirements?

  In order to be considered for this rewarding, but demanding course you will need to:-

  • Have a minimum of 3 GCSE passes at grade 3 or above
  • Or a BTEC of other equivalent foundation level course awarded at a pass grade
  • A keen interest in working in the public sector
  • Good physical health
  • Have a strong work ethic
  • Be able to problem-solve
  • Enjoy working as part of a team
  • Be practically minded

  You will be required to attend an interview to ascertain your suitability for the course

• Where does this course lead to?

  On completion of this course, you will be capable of progressing on to Level 3 Public Services

• What qualifications will be gained?

  At the end of this one year programme you will gain a Level 2 BTEC Diploma in Public Services.

• How will this course be delivered?

  This practical based course will be delivered through:-

  • Presentations
  • Task-based exercises
  • Practical demonstrations
  • 1:1 support
  • Tutorials and lectures

  This study programme will be taught over 12 hours over four days and will be delivered at Kidderminster College Main Campus and at a number of sporting facilities within the local area.   

  Classes generally run between 9am-5pm but may vary.

  Timetables will be given to all students during enrolment and induction week.

  You will be required to complete a work experience placement, which the college will organise for you, of a minimum of 180 hours across the academic year.

  Throughout this course, you will be assessed on each unit via:-

  • Practical assignments
  • Coursework
  • Presentations
  • Class work

  You will be awarded a pass or a fail on successful completion of each unit.
