Ignite Musical Theatre – Level 3

Musical Theatre fanatic? Do you dream of being on the West End? If the answer is yes, then this course is for you!

This intensive Level 3 qualification will provide you with training in a professional capacity by industry specialists. In classes and through workshops you will gain a strong technical grounding in singing, acting and dance, along with professional development and enrichment studies.

Our approach aims to relate theory to practice, inform the development of your own creative vision, and enhance lifelong skills for employment within the professional world. Throughout the two years, as a developing artist, you are encouraged to be versatile and critically evaluate your own performance as you grow in confidence and maturity.

Your developing skill set will be showcased in a number of productions throughout your training. Previous performances by Ignite Musical Theatre include Bat Out of Hell, Heathers, RENT, Spring Awakening, Les Miserables, SIX and In The Heights, along with a number of original concept productions and showcases.

Ignite Musical Theatre also works collaboratively with Ignite Acting and Ignite Technical Theatre, which allows you to create your own bespoke training programme to best suit your needs and future career goals.

  • What will be studied
    • Classical ballet technique
    • Contemporary and classical theatre
    • Physical theatre and movement in performance
    • Tap dance
    • Commercial and jazz dance
    • Musical theatre performance
    • The physical body (delivered with a focus on The Alexander Technique, which is a standard industry professional practice)
    • Practitioner study (examples acting: Stanislavski, Brecht, Grotowski, Meisner. dance: Fosse, Cole, Mattox, Bourne. music: Robert-Brown, Manual-Miranda, Larson)
    • Singing technique & voice (delivered through the Estill International Voice Training model, which is also a standard industry professional practice)
    • Audition techniques
    • Creation of your bespoke Professional Practice Portfolio
    • Choreography/directing/music direction
  • What are the entry requirements?
    • 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and Maths
    • Alternatively, completion of a Level 2 qualification in the subject area, with an overall Merit profile
    • Attendance of an inhouse multidisciplinary audition or submission of self-tapes
  • What qualifications will be gained?

    Upon successful completion of your first year of training, you will receive a UAL Level 3 Diploma in Performing & Production Arts (Musical Theatre). Then, after successful completion of your second year, you will receive a UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing & Production Arts (Musical Theatre).

  • How will I be assessed?

    The UAL Level 3 Diploma in Performing & Production Arts (Musical Theatre) and the UAL Level 3 Diploma in Performing & Production Arts (Musical Theatre) are assessed against the following guidance for all units undertaken:

    • Have a critical and contextual awareness of different perspectives and approaches within performing and production arts or related subjects of study or work
    • Research, analyse and evaluate relevant information and ideas in order to develop creative solutions
    • Understand, adapt and safely use appropriate and practical methods and skills for creative production
    • Solve complex problems through the application of practical, theoretical and technical understanding
    • Critically review the effectiveness and appropriateness of methods, actions and results
    • Use evaluative and reflective skills in order to take responsibility for own learning, development and decisionmaking
    • Take responsibility for the research, planning, time management and actions to access progression opportunities
    • Effectively present themselves and their work to appropriate audiences

    Work experience opportunities:

    Ignite Acting, Musical Theatre and Technical Theatre make frequent visits to watch live theatre, both locally and on the West End, as well as taking part in external workshops, community performances and charity events. In addition to this, learners are guided and encouraged to gain work experience within specialist fields, including work as paid extras!

    English and Maths:

    Your course will help you build on your English and Maths skills in a practical setting. All Ignite students will participate in activities that require these skills throughout their two years training; through submitting written documentation to support practical assessments and working in an industry-grade theatre and production arts workshop.

     

    We have a set uniform and kit list required for your daily activities of study and assessments. Upon success of obtaining a place on the course, you will receive all the relevant information needed.

    We provide a bursary programme which offers help and support to students from low-income families.
