Musical Theatre Diploma – Level 3

Do you love musical theatre and dream of being on the West End or Broadway? Then this intensive Level 3 course is ideal, offering you training in a professional capacity by industry specialists. In classes and workshops you will gain a strong technical grounding in singing, acting and dance, alongside professional development.

Your skill set will be showcased in a number of productions throughout the course. Large scale productions by IGNITE Musical Theatre students have included Cabaret, Crazy for You, Les Misérables, Anything Goes, Little Shop of Horrors, Spring Awakening, We Will Rock You, Sweet Charity, In The Heights, The Uncastables (Original Musical) and Musical: The Musical (Original Musical).

IGNITE Musical Theatre students and IGNITE Acting students work collaboratively over their 2 years in creating innovative pieces of Contemporary Theatre, fused with dynamic Physical Theatre elements. Past productions have included Caryl Churchill's 'A Mouthful of Birds', Alice Sebold's 'The Lovely Bones', Jim Cartwright's 'ROAD' and a stage adaptation of John Hughes' 80's cult-classic 'The Breakfast Club'.

You will also take part in the IGNITE Musical Theatre Showcase at the end of the course, to celebrate your development as an individual performer, including opportunities to showcase your skills as a Director, Writer and Music Director should you desire it.

  • What will be studied

    You will study a variety of units over 2 academic years to obtain your Extended Diploma.

    Year 1 is predominantly focused on 'Craft Development', where you will gain an equal understanding of all disciplines and begin to develop your skills in the following:

    • Singing technique (using the professional industry standard Estill Voice Model)
    • Commercial dance
    • Contemporary acting
    • Developing spoken voice
    • Tap dance
    • Classical ballet
    • Musical theatre jazz dance
    • Contemporary dance
    • Rehearsing for performance
    • Musical theatre performance

     

     

     

    Year 2 focuses on 'Artistry and Performance', where you will undertake additional units to enhance and finesse your skills as a developing artist, whilst preparing for drama school and university auditions.

    • Singing styles and performance (contemporary and legitimate)
    • Audition preparation
    • Global Dance Styles
    • Classical acting
    • Musical theatre auditions
    • IGNITE Musical Theatre showcase
  • What are the entry requirements?

    In order to be considered for this qualification, you will need:-

    • 5 GCSEs at grade 4 (formerly grade C) or above, which should ideally include English and Maths
    • Alternatively completion of a Level 2 qualification in the subject area, with an overall Merit profile.
    • A passion for the musical performance
    • Ability to work independently and with others is essential.
    • You will need to attend an interview and an audition or present a portfolio of work appropriate to the subject area.

  • Where does this course lead to?

    Careers include those such as West End, UK/International Tour performer, freelance artist, cruise ship entertainer, choreographer, theatre director, vocal coach, musical director, teacher or lecturer.

    Progression from this course can lead to professional training at prestigious musical theatre and dance schools such as Guildford School of Acting, Bird College, Laine Theatre Arts, Central School of Speech and Drama, London School of Musical Theatre, ArtsEd, Mountview Academy and outstanding universities in their field including The Arden School of Theatre, West London, Chichester and RSAMD.

  • What qualifications will be gained?

    At the end of your two year study you will gain a RSL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative and Performing Arts (Musical Theatre)

  • How will this course be delivered?

    Due to the nature of the subject, this is an intensive full-time study course and you will be required to be at college for minimum of twelve hours per week over four days.

    Compulsory evening rehearsals will be timetabled during show terms and busy periods, at the discretion of the course leader.

    Classes generally run between 9am-5pm but this may vary. Timetables will be given to all students during enrolment and induction week. Additional times will be communicated to you via your course leader.

    IGNITE Musical Theatre make frequent visits to watch live theatre, both locally and on the West End, as well as taking part in external workshops, community performances and charity events.

    This course consists of 12-15 hours per week study in college, plus additional independent study.

    Assessment in Musical Performance Level 3 is continuous, this will take place within:-

    • Class Rehearsals
    • Performance

    Places on this course are offered by meeting entry requirements, an audition or the presentation of a portfolio of work appropriate to musical performance and an interview.
