Land Based & Conservation Studies Diploma – Level 1

Want to work in the outdoors; rain, snow or shine? Want to make a difference and learn how you can lessen your environmental impact? Interested in conservation, wildlife and animal upkeep?  Then this Foundation Level Diploma is for you!

Alongside developing your knowledge, practical skills and your confidence, this course will see you getting your hands dirty. You will out in the Wyre Forest, at Ray's Farm and working in partnership with Kidderminster's park areas throughout this qualification, getting really in on the action and what is required to pursue a career caring for wildlife, the countryside and the environment.

Not only that, but you will be focussing on essential transferable skills, theoretical background knowledge and more general principles required to enter both employment and continue further study.

This course provides an incredible, rich and diverse base for you to launch into a fulfilling, practical career.

  • What will be studied

    You will study a huge array of units throughout this foundation qualification. These will include:-

    • Environmental conservation
    • Provide safe & effective working practices in land-based industries
    • Learn about animals in the wild and in society
    • The key elements of landscaping
    • Core gardening skills
    • Forestry maintenance
    • Introduction to wildlife and conservation
    • Assist with the preparation and maintenance of animal accommodation
    • The principles of horticulture
    • Agriculture
  • What are the entry requirements?

    There are no formal requirements for this entry level course, however, you will require:-

    • A reasonable standard of literacy and numeracy
    • A suitable standard of general education
    • A keen interest in practical work (you shouldn't be afraid to get your hands dirty)
    • A passion for conservation and the environment
    • An appropriate reference

    Once your application has been received you will be required to attend at interview at Kidderminster College and to complete an initial written assessment to establish your suitability for this qualification.

  • Where does this course lead to?

    Completion of this Level 1 Diploma will lead to entry on Land-based studies Level 2

    Further study can lead to employment as:-

    • Forest ranger
    • Dog handler
    • Zoologist
    • Vet
  • What qualifications will be gained?

    At the end of this year of study, you'll gain a Land Based Studies Diploma Level 1

  • How will this course be delivered?

    Lectures will be a mix of theoretical and practical work.

    You will be required to tackle various tasks and assignments throughout the course study period.

    You will be taught through presentations, practical demonstrations, independent work, 1:1 support, tutorials and group critiques.

    This study programme will be taught over 17 hours over three days. One day will be spent on the Main Campus at Kidderminster College and the other two will be utilised off-site carrying out practical work.

    Classes generally run between 9am-5pm but may vary.

    Timetables will be given to all students during enrolment and induction week.

    As part of this active, outdoor course you will be required to undertake 50 hours of work experience. This will enhance your CV to no end and give you industry specific experience to take into your future career.

  • How will I be assessed?

    Throughout this course you will be assessed at the end of each unit via:-

    • Practical assignments
    • A developing portfolio
    • Observation assessments in practical activities
