Dance – Level 3

Our Level 3 qualification is designed to provide you with a high standard of technical, creative and performance training. All of our dancers become proficient in ballet, contemporary, urban, commercial, heels, jazz, tap, choreography, improvisation, performance and safe dance practice. During your studies you will work alongside our expert staff, who are outstanding practitioners and still work professionally within the industry.

  • What will be studied

    You will study a variety of units over two academic years to obtain your BTEC National Extended Diploma.

    You will have the opportunity to participate in at least three performances a year at our in-house theatre. We also run our very own performance company 'Ignite Dance Company'. Entry is via audition and the successful company members will perform a touring schedule across venues in the West Midlands.

    Year one predominantly focuses on technical development, learners will apply and develop their technical skills and expand their knowledge and understanding in all styles of dance.

    • Performing Arts in the Community
    • Jazz Dance Technique
    • Contemporary Dance Technique

    Mandatory training/ preparations:

    • Ballet Dance Technique

    • Commercial/ Urban
    • Fitness/ Body Conditioning

    Year two focuses on refining dance technique and performance skills, learners will undertake additional units to enhance and develop skills as an aspiring performance artist, whilst preparing for vocational schools and university auditions.

    • Final Live Performance to an Audience
    • Employment Opportunities in the Performing Arts
    • Healthy Dancer
    • Movement in Performance
    • Classical Ballet Technique
    • Tap Dance Technique

  • What are the entry requirements?

    In order to be considered for this popular qualification, you must have:

    • 5 GCSEs at grade 4 (formerly grade C) or above, which should ideally include English and Maths
    • Alternatively completion of a Level 2 qualification in the subject area, with an overall Merit profile
    • A passion for dance
    • A strong work ethic
    • The ability to work as part of a team
    • The initiative to work independently

     

    PLEASE NOTE: During this process, individual circumstances where students do not fully meet the entry requirements may be considered.

    Once we have received your application you will then be invited to an audition where you will complete classes in Ballet, Contemporary and Jazz. You will also need to perform a short solo which best showcases your talents.

  • What qualifications will be gained?
    • Edexcel Level 3 (90 Credit) Diploma in Performing Arts - Dance (Year 1).

    Progression to the second year is dependent on successful completion of Year 1.

    • Edexcel Level 3 (180 Credit) Extended Diploma in Performing Arts - Dance (Year 2}
  • How will this course be delivered?

    You could be dancing up to 20 hours a week at Ignite Dance Centre!

    Our learners' study four intensive days a week from 9am - 4.15pm at Ignite Dance Centre for advanced dance training. We are based at Kidderminster College and have three specialised dance studios and an in-house theatre.

    Timetables may vary during show term, compulsory evening rehearsals will be timetabled during busy times of the academic year. We love to support our learners to continue with their extra-curricular activities and dance schools. If opportunities for performances and competitions arise, learners must seek authorised absence from the course leader in order to attend.

  • How will I be assessed?

    Practical work is assessed after each term (twelve-week period). Learners will perform technical combinations from memory under exam conditions, applying all technical corrections and feedback from classes. Practical assessments are conducted in a professional format, in front of an invited audience, including all dance lecturers.

    Assignments are spread across the academic year and a copy of the assignment calendar is always available via the learner handbook. Learners are assessed internally and externally through a variety of assessment methods. Each practical class is linked to a theoretical element to enable our dancers to become confident thinking dancers who understand the technical elements of the dance styles and comprehend the historical context of the work. Some units require evaluation logbooks to assist learners to develop their skill set through theory and practice.

  • Other Information:

    The course is absolutely free! However, there are other costs involved whilst studying on the course.

    We have a set uniform and kit list required for your daily activities of study and for assessments. Upon success of obtaining a place on the course you will receive all the relevant information needed

    We aim to provide learners with workshops throughout the year. Each workshop will be led by industry professionals and within each style of dance, usually costing around £6.

    Additionally, whilst studying on the course we would expect you to bring equipment to classes to assist with completing lesson tasks, such as;
