Carpentry Diploma – Level 1

Bench joinery and Carpentry takes precision, absolute focus, and dedication. Skilled carpenters and joiners are always in high demand, and this qualification will give you a starting point to pursue a career to launch yourself into the construction sector.

Delivered to criteria set by City & Guilds this course will lay the fundamentals for progressing to Level 2 Bench Joinery or Carpentry, an Apprenticeship or employment, ultimately giving you the confidence and skillset to pursue a rewarding and practical career.

  • What will be studied

    During this course you will cover the following modules through practical, group, tutorial and theoretical work:

    • Health, safety and welfare in construction
    • The key principles of construction, information and communication
    • Preparing and the use portable power tools
    • Producing woodworking joints
    • Maintaining and using carpentry and joinery hand tools 
  • What are the entry requirements?

    There are no formal requirements for this qualification, however, in order to be considered for this popular course, you will need to:

    • Provide a suitable reference
    • Have a reasonable standard of literacy and numeracy
    • Strong work ethic
    • Keen interest in carpentry
    • Excellent people skills

    Framing and Residential Carpenter, Commercial Carpenter, Industrial Carpenter, Bench Carpenter or Cabinetmaker

  • What qualifications will be gained?

    At the end of this study programme you will gain a Level 1 City & Guilds Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery

  • How will this course be delivered?

    This programme will be delivered via

    • Practical assignments
    • Course work
    • Presentations
    • Demonstrations
    • Class work

    Work related experience activities will be organised and take place throughout the year to give you an understanding of working within the industry and to prepare you for Level 2.

    • The study programme is 13 hours a week spread over 3 days.
    • Practical work will be carried out in our state of the art workshops, theory work will be delivered in a classroom environment.
    • Classes generally run between 9am-5pm but may vary.
    • Timetables will be given to all students during enrolment and induction week.
  • How will I be assessed?

    As part of your assessment for this course you will

    • Be required to sit 2 formal online multiple choice assessments
    • Sit 3 formal paper based multiple choice assessments
    • Achieve all practical assessments to City and Guilds standards

    You will be awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction on successful completion of each unit.

    While on the course we would expect you to bring equipment to classes to assist with completing lesson tasks, such as;

    • Pens

    • Notepad

  • WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

    After you've completed KC's Bench Joinery and Carpentry Diploma Level 1 and attained a merit or above, you can move on to:

    • KC Carpentry Level 2
