Brickwork Diploma – Level 1

This practical and in-demand course is aimed at people who wish to the basic skill of bricklaying, and for them to progress on to becoming skilled in their chosen trade, or to progress through an apprenticeship and work towards becoming a master craftsman.

This Level 1 Diploma allows candidates to learn, develop and practice the skills required for employment in Bricklaying; covering block laying, cavity walking, block paving, setting out masonry and bricklaying this course will literally lay the foundation for a fulfilling and hands-on career. 

  • What will be studied

    During this course you will cover the following modules through practical, group, tutorial and theoretical work:

    • Health and safety
    • Mixing concrete
    • Understanding the principles of construction
    • How to set out buildings
    • Being able to carry out safe working practice
    • Building methods and construction
    • Basic brick and block laying skills
    • Site communication methods



    You'll also study English and Maths alongside this course if required



  • What are the entry requirements?

    In order to be considered for this popular course, you will need  

    • Provide a suitable reference
    • Have a reasonable standard of literacy and numeracy
    • Strong work ethic
    • Excellent people skills



    You will be required to attend an interview at the college to assess your suitability for the course.



  • Where does this course lead to?

    Completion of this Level 1 Diploma can lead to:-

    • Employment in the Construction industry
    • Progression to Level 2 Diploma in Brickwork
  • What qualifications will be gained?

    At the end of this study programme you will gain a Level 1 City & Guilds Diploma in Brickwork.

  • How will this course be delivered?

    This programme will be delivered via

    • Practical assignments
    • Course work
    • Presentations
    • Demonstrations
    • Class work



    The study programme is 13 hours a week and also includes a 60 hour mandatory work placement.



    Classes generally run between 9am-5pm but may vary.

    Timetables will be given to all students during enrolment and induction week.

  • How will I be assessed?

    Assessments will occur at the end of each unit for practical and theory work.

    This will take the form of multiple-choice examinations

    You will be awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction on successful completion of each unit.

    Students aged 19+ will be subject to fees. Student finance offers help with Advanced Learner Loans and support to students, please contact Student Services on 01562 512003 or for more information.

    While on the course we would expect you to bring equipment to classes to assist with completing lesson tasks, such as;

    • Pens
    • Pencils
    • Memory stick
    • Notepad

    You will require the following:-

    • Safety footwear
    • 3m tape measure
    • We will supply additional PPE

    City & Guilds

    After completing your Level 1 in Brickwork, you will have various routes avaliable to you:- 

    • Employment in the Construction industry
    • Progression to Level 2 Diploma in Brickwork
