Art & Design – Level 3

This high energy Art and Design course will give you a broad knowledge and understanding of the different areas within Art and Design. From the fundamental key skills to ideas-based work, including exploration and investigation in a wide range of materials, techniques and processes.

The course is designed to introduce you to the main areas of 2D and 3D Art and Design, Conceptual Art, Installation and Multi-media, providing practical experience as well as enabling students to focus on specific subject areas in greater depth. The different disciplines include Drawing, Painting, printmaking, Sculpture, Photography, Interactive media, Fashion/Textiles, 3D design and conceptual art.

The aim of this highly innovative programme is to give you full access to art resources and facilities, techniques and processes, and through communication and discourse, allow you to take your own journey of discovery into professional Art practices. Emphasis will be placed upon students' ability in methods of creative production by maintaining an open mind towards the exploration of new ideas and risk-taking through the course progression.

The programme will also give students the opportunity to appreciate the work of historical and contemporary artists and designers, to inspire, motivate and inform them and to learning about associated professional practice.

  • What are the entry requirements?

    In order to gain a place on this course, you will need:

    • 5 GCSE's grade 3 - 9, including Maths and English
    • An artistic flair is essential

  • How will this course be delivered?

    This programme will be delivered in:

    • Our art studio
    • Theatre
    • Media Lab
    • The outside environment

    The study programme is 4 days a week.

    Classes generally run between 9am-5pm but may vary.

  • How will I be assessed?

    On our National Foundation Diploma, you will study 6 units, 4 of which are internally assessed in a variety of tasks including written essays, practical application of artistic skills, digital artistic practices and creation of a variety of portfolio's.

    The remaining 2 units will be assessed as external assessments, 1 being a written case study, the other being a practical response to a given stimulus.

    While on the course we would expect you to bring equipment to classes to assist with completing lesson tasks, such as;

    Due to the nature of the course, there will be an additional cost for course materials. 

    KC Art & Design students will be required to have a basic Art Kit list including:

    • Pens
    • Pencils
    • Fine liners
    • Oil pastels
    • Basic acrylic colours
    • Water colour
    • Brushes
    • Mark making tools
    • Glue
    • Scissors
    • Ruler
    • A sketchbook (cartridge paper) for each unit.
