Emma Thompson [Supporting teaching]

The Interview

Hi Emma, tell us about where you started, your work experience and where you ended.

My starting point was securing a Schools placement, at the end of the course I retained a TA position within the school, supporting middle and upper year groups. During the course I predominantly supported Y4, as well as gained experience in reception, pre-school and middle/upper school.

What skills have you gained from the course
Tell us about your progression into employment, and progression within employment

My employment was confirmed at my placement school as an SEN teaching assistant following completion of the course. I spent 2 years within middle school giving classroom support and continuing to deliver 1:1 group interventions. I worked with upper school offering exam support and became a GCSE reader, scribe and invigilator over two summers. More recently I achieved the position of Assistant SENCo, taking on additional responsibilities working closely with the SENCo, demonstrating an active interest in the wider aspects of Learning Support and Inclusion within the school.

Tell us about your experience.

Lessons were packed with content and clear instructions which enabled me to achieve a successful work/life balance…so often a challenge having younger children. The tutor was easily accessible and delivered consistent support when completing assignments at home. Linking theory to practice during placement, assessments provided concise, invaluable advice, and embedded the foundations for my continuing professional development.
