Ex-Learner Gemma Rowles’ career journey is a huge inspiration, she started off at Kidderminster College, went on to University and is now working as a Communications Officer for West Mercia Police!
Paul Tonks, Programme Leader, had this to say about Gemma:- “Gemma was a joy to teach, always had a smile and never a complaint. She completed her Level 3 Public Service course with overall grades of D*D*D and decided she wanted to go to University.”
It was not easy for Gemma, she was the first person in her family to go to University and faced a number of challenges to get there. But get there she did! Graduating from Birmingham University with a First Class Honours Degree in Criminology and Psychology!
Gemma is a first class example of how doing a vocational course can get you the career of your choice in just the same way as completing traditional A levels! Gemma’s experience shows what can be achieved if you put your mind to it!
Gemma stated – whilst at University I gained experience within Category A prisons, Open prisons, refuges and charities helping ex-offenders. These were eye opening experiences and kind of swayed me more to look at Policing roles. As a result I saw a job advertised as a Call Handler for West Mercia Police and applied. I got the position and my current job title is a Communications Officer as I deal with both 101 & 999 calls, whilst dispatching officers over the radio to emergency jobs. I enjoy this role and the job satisfaction it brings.
We’re so proud of Gemma and everything she has done here at #TeamKC
