Severn Valley Railway

Reference Number: VAC1000167577
Grade of Post: Level 2
Hours: 40
Closing Date: 25/06/2023

Severn Valley Railway are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join their team as a carpentry and joinery apprentice. You will be involved in all aspects of overhauling and maintenance of heritage railway carriage bodywork, involving wood working, upholstery and much more ensuring all work is carried out to a museum standard.

What will the apprentice be doing?

Severn Valley Railway maintains an unrivalled fleet of more than 60 passenger carriages, the age of which ranges from 60 to more than 110 years old. Some of these have bodywork constructed almost entirely from hardwood timber. As a carpentry apprentice you’re daily duties will include:-

  • The bodywork and interior overhaul and repair of carriages utilising a wide range of abilities and skills.
  • Restoration, repair, and the on-site production of a wide range of wooden components.
  • In addition to woodworking the bodywork refurbishment necessitates a multi-faceted approach to overhaul projects, including metal work repairs, plumbing, low voltage electrics, flooring, glazing, upholstery, painting and sign-writing.

There is no ‘repair manual’ for these carriages and so the ability to work out what repairs are necessary and how to achieve them is important.

All of this is undertaken at the SVRs own workshops located in Kidderminster and Bewdley, each location having a well appointed joinery shop. Additionally at Kidderminster small specialist workshops are set aside for upholstery and the examination and refurbishment of door locks.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

  • One day a week studying at Kidderminster College.
  • Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

  • There may be a full-time position for the right applicant upon completion of your apprenticeship.

Annual wage – £10,982.40
