| Aims
of the Course
The Diploma will provide students with knowledge and
understanding of the sport and active leisure industry. The Diploma combines both theory and hands on experience that gives students the opportunity to gain a fully rounded education through a number of learning methods within the environments of both the classroom and the workplace.
The development of this Diploma will assist the sport and active leisure industry by providing well rounded future employees, who will be well informed about the sector upon employment or further education.
Potential students interested in the Diploma do not necessarily have to be active participants, although they should have the strongest possible interest in the industry, whilst also be able to understand and relate to leading an active and healthy lifestyle.
The Diploma looks at three main areas:
• The individual: Explore how important an active and healthy lifestyle is, as well as how the body works and the impact of unhealthy choices like smoking and drinking.
• The industry: Learn all about the sport and active leisure
industry, and who works in it, including sports clubs, specialist colleges, commercial sponsors and funding agencies like Sport England and the National Lottery.
• The community: : Find out why the sport and active leisure industry is described as ’people-centred’, developing the allimportant customer service and relationship building skills you’ll need to succeed in it.
There are three levels of Diploma:
• Foundation (Level 1)
• Higher (Level 2)
• Advanced (Level 3)
If you’re doing a Higher or Advanced Diploma, you will cover more areas including the design and development of new products, anatomy, physiology, government policy, the role of the media, communication techniques and many more.
The course covers the following broad themes and allows you to:
• Learn about, and practice, the ’people skills’ that are so
important in this industry
• Look at the benefi ts of a healthy lifestyle, and how it can develop self-confidence
• Learn how to motivate yourself, and others, in sport or activities, with coaching, planning and offi ciating
• See how the body works, and analyse the benefi ts of healthy eating and an active lifestyle
• Explore the huge variety of career pathways in sport and leisure, and the UK industry as a whole.
Principal Learning:
• Skills, knowledge and understanding central to
Information Technology
• At least 50% is practical
Generic Learning:
• Functional skills: English, Maths, ICT
• Personal, learning and thinking skills
• Give the student the opportunity to produce an extended project
• 10 days work experience
Additional and / or Specialist Learning
• Additional Specialist units which will compliment the Principal Learning which will be practically based..
Successful Completion
Students who successfully complete the Diploma will have
opportunities to either continue to study additional qualifications within the other sectors as they have direct GCSE and A Level equivalence and gives you the relevant, transferable skills that will be welcomed by colleges, universities and employers. |
