Hair and Beauty Diploma

Aims of the Course

The Diploma in Hair & Beauty is for anyone wishing to develop a greater understanding of this exciting and dynamic industry, and the opportunities it can open up to you – from salon work, to fashion and television or even starting up your own business.

The course is designed to enable you to make informed choices through experiential learning. You will explore a range of careers and occupations across the sector.
The skills and attitudes that you will achieve will be transferable to any chosen career pathway.

A Diploma will not provide you with a ‘salon ready’ qualification, but it will give you the chance to explore and develop the skills you need to succeed in work, study and life..


Course Content

Principal Learning
- This gives the industry title of the Diploma.
- Learning which is related to the sector of the economy
- Learning which is designed and endorsed by the industry

L1 Foundation Level students will:
- Learn about the hair & beauty sector in general.
- Explore perceptions of image and beauty, including personal appearance, style and wellbeing.
- You will also have the opportunity to investigate
hair styling, basic skin care treatments and hand and nail
care.
- Gain realistic ‘hands-on’ practical experience of the sector.

L2 Higher Level students will (in addition to all of the above):
- Gain an understanding of safe and healthy working practices
- Learn about the science of hair and beauty, in addition to its history in society.
- Learn about product sales and promotional techniques, salon systems / business processes.
- Explore skin care and makeup, hair-care and styling, hand care and nail art.

Generic Learning
- Includes the assessment of Functional Skills in English,
Maths and ICT
- Develops a student’s employability skills in teamwork and self management
- Gives the student the opportunity to produce an extended project
- Requires at least 10 days compulsory work experience.

Additional and/or Specialist Learning
- Allows for the student to specialise
- Allows for the student to chose more qualifications
- Allows for flexibility and choice of learning... so it becomes more personalised to you!


Jobs and Careers

Career pathways will be linked within the hair and beauty industries, including hairdressing, barbering, beauty therapy, nail services, African type hairdressing, spa thera py, fashion, health & fitness, wellbeing, retailing, paramedical treatments, film & TV, complementary and alternative medicine, care and creative industries..

Successful Completion

The Diploma will lead to opportunities to either continue to study additional qualifications within the hair & beauty sector, or any other sector according to your GCSE and A Level equivalence. You will be equipped with the relevant transferable skills that will be welcomed by colleges, universities and employers alike.

Programme Area: Hair, Beauty, Holistic & Health & Fitness Therapies.
Course Length: One year.
Qualifications Needed:

Will be determined by the level of Diploma you wish to study.

Interview required: Yes.
Fee: £35 admin fee + If you are aged 19+ a fee may be payable - please check with Student Services.
Additional Costs: Yes (to be discussed at interview).
Materials Required: Salon uniform and equipment.
