Diploma in Society, Health and Development Levels 1 and 2

Aims of the Course

The Society, Health & Development Diploma is one of the most exciting developments in demand-led learning in 40 years. It will be challenging and stimulating for young people, providing you with an understanding of health, social care, children’s services and community justice, for example - rights and responsibilities of individuals, the way in which health care operates in this country. It will help you develop the skills critical to working successfully in all of these areas, such as problem solving, team working, communication and creative thinking.

Course Content

Principal Learning
- This gives the industry title of the Diploma.
- Learning which is related to the sector of the economy
- Learning which is designed and endorsed by the industry.

L1 Foundation Level students will learn about:
- What happens when someone is arrested/taken to an
emergency/accident dept.
- How police, ambulance and other services work together to support these individuals
- How people show that they respect individuals’ rights
- Partnerships work in your community
- How to develop communication skills and understand barriers to good communication.

L2 Higher Level students will learn about:
- Laws, rules and regulations in our society
- Their own personal values and what is important to them.
- The importance of good communication and information sharing and partnership working in the children and young people’s social care, community justice and health sectors.
- How we safeguard children.
- Why we see headlines in newspapers about older people being neglected.
- How people get injured at work.

Generic Learning
- Includes the assessment of Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT
- Develops a student’s employability skills in teamwork and self management
- Gives the student the opportunity to produce an extended project
- Requires at least 10 days compulsory work experience.

Additional and/or Specialist Learning
- Allows for the student to specialise
- Allows for the student to chose more qualifications
- Allows for flexibility and choice of learning... so it becomes more personalised to you!

Subjects covered include:
• Health, Wellbeing and Lifestyle
• Growth, Development and Healthy Living
• Working Together and Communication.


Jobs and Careers

Could lead to progression in social work, nursing and other health professions including teaching.

Successful Completion

It can help you progress to employment and further education opportunities.

 
Code FT217 Level 1 + FT218 Level 2 Year 1 + FT219 Level 2 Year 2
Programme Area: Care and Childcare.
Course Length: Level 1 - one year; Level 2 - two years.
Qualifications Needed: Determined by the Diploma you wish to study;
Level 1 - 4GCSE’s at E to include English and Mathematics;
Level 2 - 4 GCSE’s at D to include
English and Mathematics.
Interview required: Yes
Fee: £35 admin fee + If you are aged 19+ a fee may be payable - please check with Student Services.
Additional Costs: Course handbook and educational visits.
