Construction and the Built Environment Diploma  

Aims of the Course

The Diploma in Construction & the Built Environment covers a wide range of different industries such as architecture, structural steelwork, painting and decorating, glazing and surveying. The Diploma has been developed by industry and education specialists to help you gain the right mix of skills and understanding. The range of topics you will study brings together these related industries, so that you get to understand how they work from the inside.

Course Content

Principal Learning develops the knowledge, understanding and skills specific to each Diplomas relevant industry sector.

L1 Foundation Level students will:
- explore the factors that influence the design process
- be introduced to different design principles and use them to create a realistic design for a specific building structure
- use hand tools and construction equipment safely to undertake basic operations
- explore traditional and modern construction methods
- understand the best ways to use new materials and methods to help sustain the built environment
- recognise the visual and social impact of the built environment
- understand the need for building maintenance and the importance of good design and workmanship
- be introduced to the different career opportunities available in the design and creation of the built environment

L2 Higher Level students will:
- develop an understanding of planning requirements and their impact on design
- recognise the properties and uses of construction materials
- explore the application of design principles and apply acquired knowledge to the design of a complex structure
- gain an understanding of groundworks, substructure, superstructure and external works
- become aware of the hazards and risks commonly encountered in constructing the built environment
- explore the contribution the built environment makes to the physical, spiritual and emotional well-being as well as the economic prosperity of individuals and the community
- be introduced to facilities management and other support services

L3 Advanced Level students will:
- consider the changes in style and attitude towards the built environment that have occurred over time, and the impact of political policies and priorities on design
- understand the individual stages of the design and planning processes and the principles involved in taking a design through the complete design cycle
- explore the health, safety and environmental factors that affect the design of the built environment
- understand how the natural environment can be protected and maintained during construction
- explore the construction processes used to create substructures and superstructures
- examine the role of stakeholders and the community in the development of the built environment
- understand how the fabric
of buildings and structures can be protected from damage caused by elements and people

Generic Learning
- Includes the assessment of Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT
- Develops a student’s employability skills in teamwork and self management
- Gives the student the opportunity to produce an extended project
- Requires at least 10 days compulsory work experience


Additional and / or Specialist Learning

- A range of employer endorsed study options allowing students to specialise or take up complementary learning
- Allows for flexibility and choice of learning... so it becomes more personalised to you!


Successful Completion

Students who successfully complete the Diploma will have opportunities to either continue to study additional qualifications within the Business, Administration & Finance sector or any other sector as they have direct GCSE and A Level equivalence and gives you the relevant, transferable skills that will be welcomed by colleges, universities and employers.
