BTEC National Diploma in Health Studies - Level 3

Aims of the Course

To provide a Level 3 vocationally specific qualification that allows a student to practice in a variety of health & social care settings. The qualification can also provide entry into Higher Education such as social work, nursing or Foundation Degrees in related subjects.

Course Content

There is a compulsory core of 13 units which are:
• Developing Effective Communication in Health & Social Care
• Equality, Diversity in Health & Social Care
• Health, Safety and Security in Health & Social Care
• Development through Life Stages
• Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology
• Personal, Professional Development
• Sociological Perspectives for Health & Social Care
• Caring for Children and Young People
• Supporting and Protecting Adults
• Public Health
• Physiology of Fluid Balance
• Physiological Disorders.

In addition to these core units students will need to study
optional units (300 GLH) – these could include:
• Research Methodology for Health & Social Care
• Care for Individuals with Additional Needs
• Health Education
• Nutrition for Health & Social Care
• Introduction to Counselling Skills
• Environmental Health
• Working in the Health Sector
• Applied Sociological Perspectives for Health & Social Care.

The units will be selected to maximise the knowledge
and skills of all students and maintain a broad base to progress in either area of study. It is mandatory that students also attend a range of work experience placements to achieve a minimum of 300 hours which are assessed as part of the vocational programme.


Jobs and Careers

Work within care settings and other Health and Social Care environments.

Successful Completion

Could allow progression onto a range of Level 4 awards and related higher education programmes, for example social work, nursing and Foundation Degrees.

Programme Area: Care and Childcare.
Course Length: Two years full time.
Qualifications Needed:

One of the following:
• BTEC First Diploma in Health and Social Care at high Merit/ Distinction
• Four GCSEs grade A-C; one must be English
Potential students will also be interviewed to assess their suitability for a career in Care.

Interview required: Yes + reference and CRB clearance.
Fee: £35 admin fee + If you are aged 19+ a fee may be payable - please check with Student Services.
Additional Costs: Uniform for placement and Course textbook.

Examination/Assessment The course is assessed through work experience and a range of methods to include assignments, portfolios and practical tasks. All units are assessed either internally or externally via written and practical assignments.
