To provide a Level 3 vocationally
specific qualification that allows a student to
practice in a variety of health & social care
settings. The qualification can also provide entry
into Higher Education such as social work, nursing
or Foundation Degrees in related subjects.
Course Content
There is a compulsory core of 13 units which are:

Health & Social Care
• Equality, Diversity in Health & Social
Care
• Health, Safety and Security in Health
& Social Care
• Development through Life Stages
• Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology
• Personal, Professional Development
• Sociological Perspectives for Health &
Social Care
• Caring for Children and Young People
• Supporting and Protecting Adults
• Public Health
• Physiology of Fluid Balance
• Physiological Disorders.
In addition to these core units students will
need to study
optional units (300 GLH) – these could include:
• Research Methodology for Health &
Social Care
• Care for Individuals with Additional Needs
• Health Education
• Nutrition for Health & Social Care
• Introduction to Counselling Skills
• Environmental Health
• Working in the Health Sector
• Applied Sociological Perspectives for
Health & Social Care.
The units will be selected to maximise the knowledge
and skills of all students and maintain a broad
base to progress in either area of study. It is
mandatory that students also attend a range of
work experience placements to achieve a minimum
of 300 hours which are assessed as part of the
vocational programme.

The course is assessed
through work experience and a range of methods
to include assignments, portfolios and practical
tasks. All units are assessed either internally
or externally via written and practical assignments.
