BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design

Aims of the Course

The BTEC National Diploma is a two year full-time practical course, designed to be taken following GCSEs or equivalent, which allows you to experience a broad range of art and design activities.

It is a nationally recognised qualification that enables you to gain the professional skills and assemble the portfolio you need to go on to a BA (Hons) or Foundation Course.


Course Content

During the early stages of the course you experiment with a variety of materials and techniques including drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, textiles, drawing, graphics, 3D and sculpture.

The later part of the course concentrates on the skills needed for your chosen area and develops your confidence in communicating ideas, opinions and creativity.

Successful Completion

Could allow you to progress onto Foundation Diploma in Art & Design, Higher Education or employment.

Programme Area: Art and Design
Course Length: Two years full time study.
Qualifications Needed: You should be at least 16 years of age with at least 4 GCSE qualifications at grade C or above or a BTEC First Diploma in Art & Design (or equivalent).
Interview Required: Yes, you will be asked to bring along a portfolio of work demonstrating an ability to benefit from a programme at this level.
Fee: £35 admin fee + If you are aged 19+ a fee may be payable - please check with Student Services.
Additional Costs: Study visits to museums, galleries and other related sites.
Materials Required: We provide much of what you need, but in support of this and to help foster a personal professional attitude to your studies, you will be asked to provide yourself with basic materials and equipment.
