Level 3 A Level Media Studies

Course Content

AS Media Studies is one of a suite of A-Levels courses chosen to complement our range of full-time Level 3 courses, particularly Creative Industries courses. The media are all around us and impact greatly on our daily lives. We will analyse, question and engage with a range of media. The main areas of study will be television, film, advertising and print-based media. We study two modules:

Module 1: Media Representations and Responses
This unit offers a framework for analysing media texts. We explore media through studying all kinds of texts, such as film, TV, computer games, magazines, websites, music, advertising etc. As we do, you will develop understanding of genre, narrative and representation and make links between the texts and how we/audiences/users respond to them.
There will be one exam of 2.5 hours in June.

Module 2: Media Production Processes
For this unit, we create a variety of media, choosing from options designed to suit your interests, e.g. film posters, film trailers, TV and print advertisements, magazine covers and/or articles etc. Through your own original media pieces you will develop and demonstrate skills and an informed, practical understanding of media production processes. You will create three pieces of linked work.

Jobs and Careers

The course is ideally suited to those aiming to work in either a specialised media role and/or in careers requiring a practical and critical understanding of how media is used in our daily lives.
